After dinner, we made our way to Elite training. Our schedules were becoming so erratic now, it was like we barely even had time to breathe. Especially the second and third years. While they had more classes than us first years, they were condensed into a shorter time period, so I could feel the stress thrumming from Ambrose and Rafe as we walked together through the copse of jungle.

We were quiet, the only sound the howling wind and twitching branches. Animals scattered somewhere in the shadows, but I couldn’t quite make them out.

The sun beyond the horizon was barely setting, so light still illuminated our way, but soon darkness would fall entirely.

As soon as we broke through the foliage and made it to the marble square, we stopped along the edge.

Professor Elara was there, his arms crossed against his chest. And beside him, my father stood in the same stance as the professor, but he was bigger, with more muscle and a meaner expression.

His expression didn’t frighten me. That was a face I’d been looking at since I was born. If anything, it made me smirk.

“Good evening, Elites,” Professor Elara called out once we were all assembled. “Tonight’s class will be given to you by the Son of Triton, General of Syros and the Syrosian ranks, Torin Solandis.” His hand made a vague gesture towards my father while his eyes glared as if to say, ‘Don’t fucking disappoint me.’

It was chilling.

My father stepped forward, done with introductions and small talk. He hated that shit. I took him in. He looked different among all of this. At home he was soft, and a part of me was giddy to see him in action within his everyday life. The life of men and the Sons.

“Elara has been teaching you all to fight, but I am going to teach you to fight better.”

My eyes shot to the professor at those words. All he did was tighten his jaw.

I blushed for him.

“You’ll put everything to the test. From battle strategy to defense and offense, magic and conditioning. Your training will consist in two parts. The land training and the sea training.” My father smiled, showing his brilliant, white teeth. “Mister Lazos and Miss Solandis, please come forward.”

My whole body stiffened, and a whisper passed through the crowd.

Fuck.

Was he going to make us face each other once again? The last time that had happened, I’d almost died afterwards.

I didn’t want a repeat of that incident.

Reluctantly, I stepped onto the marble, making sure to keep my distance from Vitas. We faced one another, assuming defensive and offensive stances.

My father chuckled. “The two of you will work together against me.”

I blinked.

What. The. Fu—

“You’re pairing me with her?” Vitas demanded loudly.

I cringed at the hint of accusation in his voice, especially with the way my father frowned in his direction. If there was one thing he couldn’t stand, it was insubordination. Vitas would pay for that. Dearly.

It happened in an instant.

My father slammed his feet forward, moving in a blur.
