‘What the hell were you thinking?’ I demanded, the moment we were free of the town. ‘This is suicide.’

Fermat’s eyes were bright, blinking in the wind and the dust. ‘It isn’t. Not for us. We were the best, Browne. We were unmatched, for eight years.’

I felt the tin in my pocket, cold to the touch. ‘Exactly. Were. I am not that person anymore.’

‘Even out of practice you are better than anyone.’ He reached into his jacket and drew out the money. In the wind of the plain, those little papers seemed absurd. ‘Anyway, with this, we can buy help.’

I finally managed a laugh, a sound so hard that Dog turned and stared at me.

‘What “help”? Who are we going to find out here? Drop-outs, ex-insurance salesmen, students who soiled their vivas–’

‘We’re out here, aren’t we?’

‘That’s different.’

‘Hénon and Heiles,’ he threw the names at me. ‘Tell me they’re not just the men for this kind of work.’

‘They’re gone. Didn’t you hear? They hijacked a steamer, last seen heading south.’

‘Minggatu then. I know he’s getting on, but he’s a master.’

‘Minggatu’s dead. Last year.’

‘Lovelace?’

‘They busted her gambling syndicate, two years ago. She’s been locked up since.’

He turned his back on me, tugging at the straps of his saddle. ‘I might know someone else,’ he muttered after a moment. ‘I didn’t want to bring her into it, but it looks like we’ll have to.’

‘Who?’

His neck was turning red. ‘Her name’s Germain. Right now she’s doing a vaudeville act to make ends meet.’

A mathematician, doing vaudeville? ‘Where?’

Fermat smiled humourlessly. ‘Where do you think?’
