After Corey dressed, he led Will downstairs again, but stopped at the front door

with his hand on the knob, his head cocked at an inquisitive angle. Will didn’t notice

he’d stopped until he bumped into Corey’s stiff back. “What?”

Corey glanced at him, and that seemed to make up his mind. Catching Will’s hand

in his own, he pulled Will down the hall that led to the kitchen, a resolute set to his jaw.

“You should meet Bobby.”

“He’s here?” Will glanced around, suddenly nervous. He’d thought they’d been

alone…had Bobby heard them upstairs? As Corey stopped at the last door off the

hallway, Will pointed out, “I thought you said he didn’t want to talk to the cops.”

“He didn’t want to go to the police station with me,” Corey corrected, flashing Will

a quick grin. “But you’re here, and he’s here, so why not just stop in and say hi?”

Before Will could argue the matter, Corey knocked on the closed door. His other

hand still held Will’s, their palms growing uncomfortably warm where they were

pressed together. In a hoarse whisper, Will suggested, “Maybe he’s gone out….”

But from the other side of the door, he heard a sniffle, then an angry male voice

called out, “What the fuck you want?”

“It’s me, man.” Corey dropped his hand to the door knob and rattled it. Will could

tell from the sound it made that it wasn’t locked. “Can I come in a minute? There’s

someone I want you to meet.”

“Who?”

Corey inched open the door and peeked inside. Will glanced through the opening

and saw a room that looked more in line with the messy bedroom he called home than

Corey’s upstairs—clothing was strewn on the floor and hung from the end of the bed.

Stretched out along the bed he saw a pair of slim, bare legs, tanned flesh spotted with

bruises, big feet hidden in a pair of holey socks.

As Corey eased the door open farther, Will leaned back against the wall, keeping

out of sight. Corey’s hand slipped free from his as he entered the bedroom.

“Hey,” he said softly. “How you feeling?”

“Like shit. Who’s with you?”

Corey closed the door part way, leaving it open a crack. Will stepped closer,

listening. “Some guy I met yesterday,” Corey said. “The one with the 350? The red

Nissan that picked me up around midnight, remember?”

Bobby’s voice rose, incredulous. “You brought him here? What for, man? That’s

stupid.”

“It’s cool,” Corey assured him. “He’s a cop—”

“Aw, shit.” Will heard something thrown to the floor, a book perhaps, something

heavy. “You fucking idiot.”

When Corey spoke again, there was a steel in his voice that surprised Will. “Shut

the hell up, Bobby. This is my house, got it? My rules. There’s some fucking pervert

cruising the streets who gets off on beating up hustlers, and maybe you can ignore what

he did to you, but I can’t. I got a half-dozen other boys out there I gotta protect. And if

you ain’t gonna help me keep them safe, then you can pack up your shit and get out of

here tonight. Got it?”

Will held his breath, waiting. When Bobby replied, his voice was sullen; he

sounded like a chastised child.
