      Tree: single trunk, ascending branches with drooping tips, spreading round crown

      Leaf: simple, lance-shaped, 2–4" (5–10 cm) long, alternately attached, long tapering tip, asymmetrical leaf base, evenly spaced sharp teeth, hairs on the veins, dark green above, paler below

      Bark: unique gray bark with thin corky ridges, wart-like

    Flower: tiny green flower, ⅛" (.3 cm) wide, sprouting from the base of young leaves in early spring

      Fruit: green berry-like fruit (drupe), turning deep purple, sweet and edible when ripe, ¼" (.6 cm) wide, 1 seed

 Fall Color: yellow

Origin/Age: native; 100–150 years

    Habitat: wide variety of soils, partial shade

    Range: only Hemphill County in the panhandle, planted in parks and yards

Stan’s Notes: Unique corky bark makes this tree easy to identify. Similar to Netleaf Hackberry and Sugarberry. In autumn, mature trees are laden with dark purple berry-like fruit, which typically doesn’t last long since it is a favorite food of many bird species. Fruit can remain on trees through winter if not eaten by birds. Suffers from witches’-broom, a non-fatal condition caused by combined efforts of an insect and a fungus that results in dense clusters of small short twigs at ends of branches. Often has dimple-like galls on leaves (which do not affect tree health) caused by mites. Susceptible to mistletoe. Also called Hacktree, Northern Hackberry or Sugarberry.
