Chapter 10

“I need to talk to you,”

Chris said while thinking how odd it was to be using such a technologically advanced device to call an old rotary phone sitting at the top of the stairs in a centuries-old house.

“Where are you?” Eduardo asked, not showing surprise by the out-of-the-blue phone call.

“I’m in Laredo. I have some important information about Chico. Are you available this afternoon?”

“Yes, I would like to hear what you have to say. What time can you be here?”

Chris looked at his watch. It was 3:30. “I can be there in about half an hour.”

“Yes, that will be fine. Do you remember how to get here?” Eduardo asked.

“Yes,” Chris said. “See you soon.”

Chris walked back to the car. Michael was still asleep. He drove toward the part of town that he was somewhat familiar with to get his bearings. Once there, he recognized some landmarks and turned toward his destination. Michael woke up and looked around, asking, “Where in the hell are we going?”

“I have someone I want you to meet,” Chris said. “I think you will find this very interesting.”

Michael lit a cigarette as Chris drove on. He soon turned off the main road and down Flowering Cactus Drive. Michael looked out his window at the lavish homes with their well-manicured landscaping and commented, “You didn’t tell me your friend lived in the slums.”

At the end of the street, Chris pulled into the large circular driveway and turned off the engine. The two men got out of the truck just as Eduardo appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Hola, my brother,” he said as he descended the steps to greet them. “I am so glad to see you.”

He walked over to Chris and fervently shook his hand, grinning broadly as he looked at him. “I have been so worried about you since your last call.”

“Thank you. I apologize for my abrupt ending. I was very tired, it had been a long day.”

Eduardo stood back and held up his hands, gesturing. “Please, there is no need to apologize, my friend.”

“Eduardo,” Chris said, turning toward Michael, “I would like you to meet Michael…my father.”

Eduardo was visibly surprised at this announcement and took a second to regain his usual demeanor, eventually saying, “Welcome, Michael. This is quite an honor.” He walked over to shake his hand. Eduardo was clearly confused, not just by the fact that Chris had a father, but about why he would bring him here. However, his social graces intervened in the situation, and he behaved in his usual courteous fashion.

“Thank you, Eduardo,” Michael said.

“Please come and sit down. You have much to tell me, I’m sure.” Eduardo gestured for the men to follow him as he walked up the stairs.

He led Chris and Michael through the courtyard, the first floor of the house, and out onto the patio where Chris had last seen the two señoras having breakfast. The afternoon sun was now setting behind the tall hedges and the wisteria that enveloped the wooden arbor keeping the patio cool and shaded.
