Chapter Seventeen

AS NYDIA EXITED THE ER, her breath caught when she saw Jo leaning against her car. It had been a few days since the dinner at Jo’s house. Now, whenever she had a spare moment, Jo was almost all she could think about. Here it was the following Tuesday, and she was looking forward to them spending the evening together. Maybe she could find the words to let Jo know how deeply in love she was with her. Gone were any residual doubts. This was love, and she knew it with every fiber of her being.

Jo stood up as Nydia stopped in front of her. “So, how was the day in the trenches?” Jo rested her hands on Nydia’s hips.

The warmth of Jo’s fingers seeped through Nydia’s shirt. The action seemed so natural. Nydia had no reference but imagined this was what coming home felt like. “Not too bad. No traumas came in today. It was just your average day-to-day emergencies. How was yours?”

“There is nothing average about anything you ever do.” Jo placed a quick kiss on Nydia’s lips. “My day was busy. We had a lot of follow up and paperwork to do the last few days with Barbara’s case and several others. We thought we had a new lead, but I still haven’t been able to track down her husband. I only wish I could figure out where he’s holed up.”

Jo ran her fingers through her hair. It was a gesture Nydia had come to find familiar and endearing, but she missed being held. Nydia took Jo’s other hand in hers. “Don’t beat yourself up, honey. I know you and Duncan are doing everything you can.”

Jo smiled and let out a deep sigh. “You’re right. We’ll need another statement from Barbara now that she has had more time to think about what happened. See if she knows anything about the new lead. We’ll also ask her about any other friends or relatives she thinks may be willing to hide him. We’ve checked the ones we think would. But for now, we’re still looking. He must be getting help from somewhere and someone, and I’ll be damned if I can figure out who.”

“How about the other case? The one you didn’t know about? Richard Neilson? The gay man?”

“We arrested the husband. How is Richard by the way? Will he be okay?”

“He’s been moved to the rehab unit in the hospital, but the surgery to remove his spleen went well. It’s just a matter of getting him mobile again. I guess as the lead detective I can tell you this much, he lost a great deal of memory and motor function as a result of the brain trauma. It’s so sad. He was a graduate student and now he’s lost that.”

Jo stepped closer so they were almost standing as one. “It’s been a long week. We hardly talked, and I love you. That’s all I want to concentrate on tonight.” She reached out and, with a gentle touch, pushed an errant bit of hair behind Nydia’s ear.
