His primary fear was not of the Israelis, but rather the Jordanians. He planned to return via Jordan, and he had already been given a hard time by Jordanian security when he first tried to reach Syria. After 26 hours he trudged back through the mountains carrying the questionnaires and letters, as well as photos and video cassettes. Then he made his way directly to Jordan. He was not surprised by what greeted him:The whole mukhabarat was waiting there. They started carrying my bags, which they did not hand back, and they said, “Bassem, tomorrow you know where to come.” And I said, “Yeah, of course.” Next day, I went [to mukhabarat headquarters where he had been interrogated upon his first, abortive effort to reach the deportees]. I found that they copied everything; even the letters they opened, and they copied the letter itself and the envelope. They made slides of the pictures.
