There’s nothing in the world quite like fight night, the lights the heat, the sound, even the smell. It’s like a drug. You can take it over and over and still need more. I’m on the undercard, the last fight before the big fights for the night begin. I can hear the crowds and the announcers. Ring-Bunnies are in and out of the ladies dressing area. The only other women here are them, and my opponent who they have kept away from me.

I can’t understand the backstage chatter because it’s all in Russian. But I see the sideways looks I get. They don’t like me, it’s obvious. “What are they saying?” I ask Nadia, it’s never bothered me, until tonight. It is fight night and I want to know.

“Nothing,” she says, carefully wrapping my hands.

“Liar,” I call her bullshit, “what do they say about me?” She looks around the room and waits until we are alone again.

“The one in the pink thong says she thinks it’s unfair you sleeping with your manager to get fights.” She shrugs, “The other one says you sleeping with him for his money, not fights.” I’m sort of shocked, but not surprised because I do live with him. Of course they think I am in bed with him.

“It’s not true, neither of them is right.”

Nadia chuckles. “I know that, so do you. Let them talk.” I should let them, but I also want to set them straight. Tonight is not the time for this, I can’t be distracted. I have to focus on what is important, winning. Who cares if they think I am sleeping with my brother’s best friend.

“Let them talk,” I say as she gloves me up, “I have a fight to win.” Nadia smiles and nods her head.

“You can’t lose, she’s not any good. She just has a lot of supporters.” They always do, they don’t have to be good to have fans. Just popular. I’m not there yet but Alek is working on it. This fight is the start of his plan. “Stay focused. Don’t let her get any lucky shots in.”

“I am the Lucky Lass,” I joke, “not her. She’s got no chance,” I say to my coach, confident I am going to live up to the expectations. I know I am better than her, than most of these fighters.

“Just do what he says, Rory,” Nadia reminds me, “he knows what he is doing here. You can’t go all independent woman in Russia. Alek will keep you safe as long as you do what you’re told.” It’s beyond me why they all think I won’t do what I am told. I’ve got this far in my life without pissing off the wrong people, my brothers have the same slimy business associates.

“I know. Win when I am told to, lose when it’s the time.” I smile and she nods, I am ready. I was fucking born ready for this. I cannot wait to get out there, to fight. To feel that adrenaline, to not have to hold back like in practice.
