Sylvia was no longer allowed to sit anywhere in the house. Even the pile of dirty laundry that she used as a bed was dispersed by Gert’s kicking feet before she was allowed to lie down at night. The few times that Sylvia had tried to sit down without thinking had resulted in another screeching sermon from Gert on her filthiness, the filthiness of women in general, and then moved on to more general musings about the kinds of liquids that might come oozing out of a whore when she sat down. It had made Sylvia nauseated enough to never try sitting in the house again.

When she went to school the day after she had been kicked. She struggled to sit at her desk comfortably. Letting out a little whimper when she sat down and drawing a snigger from her classmate Stephanie Baniszewski. A snigger that she then accompanied with a lewd hand gesture to the girl sitting beside her by way of explanation. Sylvia didn’t cry. She’d learned well enough by now that crying did no good. Instead of getting upset, she got angry, and while it wasn’t in her power to hurt Gert directly, she could certainly lash out at her lesser tormentors.

During her school days, Gert had never been able to handle the rumours about her, riding on the wave of the ones that she could use, but never really understanding how they spread. Even as an adult she struggled to keep her secrets to herself, misunderstanding human nature so much that she believed the little favours she did in letting the neighbourhood children linger around her house would keep them from talking about the disgusting state it was in, or speculating about her children. In fact, her very deliberate attempts to suppress any information coming out of her home had created a kind of vacuum of information where people would believe almost anything about them, especially if it came from a source close to the family. Like a lodger.

Despite the humiliations that she had endured up until this point, Sylvia was fairly innocent, and even if she had intended on spreading a nasty rumour about someone she probably wouldn’t have known where to start—if someone hadn’t spent the previous night repeatedly screaming about an apparently evil act. The fact that Sylvia was so innocent just added more credence to the things that she was saying about the Baniszewski girls. After all, how would sweet, innocent Sylvia Likens even know what prostitution was if she hadn’t seen it with her own two eyes? Jenny picked up the story from her at lunchtime, and by the end of the day, the whole school was buzzing with the rumours. Paula and Stephanie Baniszewski had been having sex with boys for money.

The Baniszewski girls never heard a word about it themselves, but they weren’t stupid, they knew that something was going on when conversations suddenly dried up the moment that they came into earshot. They might not have had
