After unloading three pallets, checking expiration dates, and stocking the shelves, Nigel looked at his watch. It was 1537. As he worked, he witnessed how well the place ran. Not to mention the exceptional level of caring kindness the volunteers extended to all the shoppers. Never once was anyone made to feel small or insignificant, simply because they were in need. If anything, the volunteers made everyone feel welcome and instilled a sense of appreciation for their shopping there. Just as any commercial grocer would treat any paying customer. It was sort of contagious.

He walked to the front counter. Ms. Martha was finishing up with another customer. He heard her explaining. “Yes, Ms. Cindy. I’m sorry. We pray and hope to get some jelly in by the time you come back. We will do what we can.”

The lady, Ms. Cindy, said, “Bless you,” and walked out the door with her groceries.

Nigel lifted an eyebrow. “Jelly?”

“Oh, yeah… it is always in high demand. We run out often, so it’s a matter of luck to provide any at all.”

“Hmm,” grunted Nigel. “Well, I’m all done with the stocking. What else can I do?”

“Oh, dear. You have done enough.”

“I’m serious,” insisted Nigel. “You said there was plenty to do. Just say the word.”

“You are so sweet,” said Martha. “We’ll be closing at four, so you get on with the rest of the day. But…”

“But what?”

“We wouldn’t turn you away if you came back to help sometime.”

Nigel looked around at who remained as they shopped around the store. Then turned to Martha. “I think that will be a simple thing to do, if you’ll have me.”

“Don’t be stupid,” said Martha. “We could always use a bit of muscle around here.”

“And you have muscles,” added Vanesa.

Martha slapped her friend’s arm and spoke to Nigel. “Pay her no mind. Now get out of that skimpy little apron and get.”

Nigel ran his hands down the front of the apron all sexy like and said, “I don’t know. I think it might stress my finer qualities.” Then he came across his swollen belly, a stark reminder that the washboard abs were no longer there. He quickly untied it, handed it to Martha and said, “Okay... Maybe it shows off a little too much.”

The two ladies watched as he scurried off to his Bronco and crawled behind the wheel.

Vanesa said, “Can you believe Candice ran him off?”

“Candice?”

“Yes, Martha. The bar manager?”

“The place they call City Bar?”

“Uh, huh.”

“They were a couple?”

“Why yes, girl! Where have you been? This tiny town is only so big and you know it holds no secrets.”

Martha put her hands on her hips, and with raised eyebrows, said, “Well. I certainly haven’t been hanging out at the City Bar. That’s for sure.”

“Oh, Martha! Don’t go all hating on me now. A little snort every now and again might do you some good.”

“It does! It does!” said Martha in a whisper and with a wink. Then she rolled her eyes. “Just not in public.”
