Picture 5: Interconnected circle map.[xiii]
This simple thinking tool is great for illustrating complexity. Here we can share our ideas about the changing behaviors within a system, pick the most significant elements in light of those changes, and trace causeâeffect relationships with arrows. This way, we preserve the complex nature of the system (everything outside of the circle periphery) and can see and manage a variety of interactions at once (everything within the circle).
If cluster maps are level one in a computer game, interconnected circle are level two. And level three would be causal loop diagrams. I will talk about causal loops in detail in the next chapter, but here I would only like to mention that interconnected circles can be a helpful jumping board to make causal loop diagrams. The challenge in designing a causal loop diagram often is finding its starting point. An interconnected circle map will already contain the principal elements and significant connections, so detecting change-driving feedback loops afterward wonât be that difficult.
