* * * *

Tony couldn’t ask Sam not to come when he’d told him to come only a few minutes ago, right?

He stared at his phone, wondering if he’d made a mistake. He wanted to see Sam and to talk to him, but he was also terrified.

He swallowed and tried to think logically instead of letting his fear and feelings take over. He’d already asked Sam to come over, and he wouldn’t go back on that. Besides, he knew Sam well enough by now to be sure his mate would stay away or back off if Tony needed him to. Tony disliked that Sam and everyone else had to treat him like he was fragile, but he knew he was. They weren’t wrong to treat him that way.

So he and Sam would do what they’d done the last time. Tony had enjoyed talking to Sam and telling him about his life before he was tortured the second time, and he’d enjoyed stroking Sam’s soft fur just as much. It was easier to talk to him when he was in his rabbit form, and Tony hoped Sam wasn’t offended by that.

Still, Tony needed to talk to someone right now, before he freaked out, and who better than Miles?

Tony only realized what he was doing once he was already in the hallway outside his bedroom and headed toward Miles’s. He’d left his bedroom without even thinking about it twice. Going downstairs for lunch today had been hard, but this time, he hadn’t even hesitated.

He stopped in the middle of the hallway and swallowed. He was nowhere near healed, but he truly felt like he’d finally turned the page and like he was taking his life into his own hands and moving forward instead of staying still and allowing the people who had tortured him to ruin the rest of his life.

He was alive. He’d made it out, and no matter how hard it was, he was going to enjoy the rest of his life.

He knocked on Miles’s door. His palms were sweaty, and he rubbed them onto his thighs. Miles opened the door, smiling, and his eyes went wide when he saw Tony standing there. “Holy shit. What happened to you today?” he asked.

Tony pushed past him and stepped into the bedroom. He felt calmer once he was there and the door was closed. He trusted everyone in the house, but he didn’t like feeling exposed, not even to them. He was safe in Miles’s bedroom, though. He took a deep breath, then faced his best friend. “I asked Sam to come over,” he said instead of answering Miles’s question. He wouldn’t have been sure how to answer it anyway.

Miles slowly nodded. “That’s good, right?”

“It is, but I’m freaking out. I don’t think I can stop.”

Miles came closer but still kept his distance. “What did you tell him?”

“I asked him if he wanted to come over, and I said we could do what we did the last time he was here.”

“Which is cuddle him in his rabbit form, right?”

Tony hoped he wasn’t blushing.
