Chapter 11

Guen

We stride through the dark woods, Gabel on my right and Deimos on my left. Night cloaks the forest in every direction with only the two moons overhead lighting the way.

Deimos’ socks slide over my feet, but they offer a layer of protection from the forest floor, so I suck it up and keep tugging them up my legs.

It’s hard to decide if I want to kiss him or punch him most of the time. He’s hiding so much from me, and I can’t help but feel as though I’m walking into a trap. They want me to somehow help with their realm problems, but I have no clue how to begin or if they even have the right person. What will happen to me if I can’t perform whatever miracle they’re expecting?

I keep catching Gabel stealing glances my way, and fear burrows deep in my gut. The kind that tells me he didn’t buy Deimos’ lies. But I don’t know who to trust. These two fae don’t trust each other. So where does that leave me?

“Gainy, what village are you from again?” he asks, and there it is, the web unraveling at my feet. I hold back a grimace, my mind scrambling for what to say.

“Wavertorn,” Deimos responds on my behalf.

“It’s a wonderful place,” I add quickly. “My family and friends are there. I grew up right by the water.”

“Water? Isn’t Waverton located near the desert?”

My throat dries like the desert, and a flash of confusion washes over his face. “Near the oasis, of course.” I need to stop pretending like I know anything about this world. Under his gaze, I’m squirming, so I change tactics.

“What exactly is a Game Keeper?”

Gabel’s face cracks into a smile and he lets out a heavy laugh. “I guess this must be all very new to you, having come from such a small town.” His words scare me… He knows I’m not from Waverton. I can hear it in his voice.

But I keep it cool. Breathe normally while my head is screaming to stop talking.

“My role in the kingdom is to take the king or queen out on hunts for game.”

“Is that all? Sounds like a fun job.” Sweat trickles down my back, and I glance over to Deimos for assistance, but he offers nothing.

“It may seem that way on the outside, but there’s so much more to the role.” He leans closer. “When we hunt, it’s usually just me and the king with only a few guards traveling for long periods of time. I use that time to everyone’s advantage.”

My eyes widen. “You have him all to yourself, to find out things, to whisper in his ear.”

He nods with a curt smile. This man is dangerous because I suspect he’s holding so much knowledge and influence. That’s why Deimos told me to be cautious, to hide my real identity.

“That’s a matter of perspective,” Deimos adds. “What one man imparts to the king or queen can be very intentionally skewed in his favor.
