Marcus watched Henrietta flee the library as if the hounds of Hell were after her. He allowed her space, but she wasn’t quick enough to depart that he hadn’t noticed her eyes had filled with tears. He too started for his room, and went over their interlude, every action he’d made, every move, kiss, and touch. Surely he’d not hurt her. He continued to his room and thought over what else could be bothering her.
Their lovemaking had been spontaneous. When he’d touched her leg out on the terrace he’d not meant for it to go as far as it did, or end up with them in the library making love with such passion, such unsated need that even now he wanted to be with her again. Even if to be simply near her, to talk and laugh as they did.
He sighed, walking over to the jug and bowl on a side table and pouring some water into the bowl to clean his face. He splashed water over his face, then using a cloth cleaned himself up as much as he could. Tonight he would go to Henrietta and ensure she was well, that she didn’t regret their actions. He had never, and nor would he ever, force anyone to continue an affair if they did not want.
The more time he spent with the lass, the more he liked her. So much more than he thought he would when they’d tumbled into an liaison. He could see her beside him always, the stepmama to his son, mistress of both his Scottish estate and those in England.
He pulled off his cravat, laying it over a nearby chair. Henrietta had not hinted at marriage—she merely spoke about his impending departure as inevitable and with little emotional response. It did not make his reading of her easy. Did she wish to marry him?
He rubbed a hand over his jaw. For God knows he liked her, beyond any other woman before her, and forever seemed not long enough.
