Chapter Twelve

Conrad

My life was back to pure awesomeness.

Lexie was back in my life, and she occupied my bed more often than I slept alone. Her quiet sighs during sleep acted as my lullaby. She kept me warm during the night, and my hands were always on her smooth skin, reminding myself that I wasn’t alone anymore.

She was all mine.

I wasn’t sure how I remained in denial for so long. But I somehow managed it. I kept telling myself Lexie was just a hot friend I enjoyed in the sack. She didn’t mean anything to me.

But in reality, she was everything to me.

She was my best friend, the person I turned to for everything. She understood my sense of humor, and she also understood my heart. When I said affectionate things, she didn’t tease me. Instead, she gave me the same look in return. I didn’t tell her I loved her very often but I showed her in many ways. I never wanted her to leave me again. Jared ripped her apart and I wanted her to understand she was safe with me.

I would never hurt her.

After work, I headed to Beatrice’s apartment then knocked on her door. I hadn’t heard from her in a few days. She and Jared didn’t seem to hit it off, but then again, neither one of them made any real effort. Perhaps it was because Lexie and I were sitting across from them.

She opened it, and she didn’t look happy to see me. In fact, she looked downright angry.

“What did I do?” I blurted.

Her eyes burned in her usual fire. “Why the hell would you set me up on a blind date? You totally ambushed me.”

“It was a last minute decision.”

That didn’t dull her anger. “Whether it was a last minute decision or not, I don’t want to be set up with Lexie’s ex-husband.”

“Hey, he’s a pretty cool guy.”

“Then let me clarify,” she hissed. “I don’t want to be set up with anybody.”

“Why not?” I asked as I walked inside. “You really think I’d set you up with someone if I didn’t approve of him?”

She crossed her arms over her chest as she followed me. “I can get my own dates.”

“Really?” I challenged. “You’re the coldest and most intimidating woman in the world. I find it hard to believe anyone would approach you.”

“Screw you, Conrad.”

I decided on a different tactic. “I know how you are. You’re a hermit, and you’ll stay cooped up in your house until someone pulls you out. I want you to see the world, and not through your falsified lenses.”

She calmed down slightly. “I appreciate what you’re trying to do, but I don’t want to date him.”

“I didn’t ask you to date him. I just introduced you. If you don’t like the guy, then whatever. Go find another one.”

“I don’t want another one, Conrad.” She turned away as she stepped further into her apartment. She purposely kept her back to me.

Now I understood, and I felt insensitive. “Beatrice.” I grabbed her shoulders and forced her to turn around.
