CHAPTER 30

The mall wasn't that far from the hotel, and once they were ready to go, they checked out and left the car parked in the lot, walking the short distance. Rachel was anxious to get into some new clean clothes rather than the oversized sweats she had been in since the night before. While they were much more comfortable and stylish than the orange jumpsuit, she badly wanted to be in some normal clothes.

As they made their way up the road, Warren led them into a sporting goods store adjacent to the main mall building. Taking a cart Warren wheeled it to the women's clothing section.

“We'll be doing a bit of hiking so…” he told her.

Rachel began going through the racks of pants and tops while Warren left her and went to the men's section to get the things he was going to need. When she was done trying on and selecting several pairs of pants and shirts, she piled them into the cart, where Warren had deposited the stack of clothes he had collected along with other hiking equipment, including two backpacks, while she was in the dressing room. She looked up and scanned the store to see where he had disappeared to when he came up from behind her, dropping a pair of canvas hiking boots into the buggy.

“You almost ready?” he asked.

“Yeah,” she replied.

“Let's get you a pair of boots and head out,” he told her.

Done with her boots, they were heading to checkout when Warren picked up a packaged cell phone and put it in the buggy. Rachel watched him and smiled, knowing he was thinking of her and the request she had made the night before concerning a call to her mother.

After they checked out, Rachel stopped at the bathroom in the front of the store and emerged wearing a pair of khaki cargo pants, long-sleeved shirt and a North Face fleece vest. In the time it took her to change clothes, Warren had stuffed the other items into the packs and changed into his hiking boots. As they left the store, they blended in well. This part of the country lent many opportunities to those who enjoyed the outdoors. With their new clothes, they looked very much the part of the typical northwestern college students out for a week of hiking through the mountaintops of the Rockies.

With the packs on their backs, Warren led them to the bus stop just up the road from the sporting goods store. They hadn't been waiting for long when Warren noticed a van at the hotel they had just left. It looked out of place amongst the other vehicles in the lot. He stared and concentrated a bit harder. Closing his eyes and tilting his nose up in the air, he was still a bit too far to really get a good enough scent. He stared intently at the van and watched it suspiciously. Not until the three men raced from the entrance of the hotel to the van did he realize who they were and the threat they posed.
