Mary’s had been a local favorite for over sixty years, serving up the best breakfast and lunch in all of Tidewater. There were other fine places too, but none with the reputation of Mary’s. It was Nigel’s favorite back in the day. He didn’t expect that to change.

The place looked crowded, but Nigel lucked out and parked the FJ right out front. He thought it best to drive Stone’s Toyota while he was in town. It was much quieter and blended in with the traffic better. The Bronco was an attention-getter, and he didn’t want to take any chances. He wasn’t sure how much Manchester might remember about the Bronco, so Nigel thought it was smarter to drive the FJ.

He walked in and he inhaled through his nose. The place hadn’t lost its smell: comfort food from heaven. It was as if he never left, and he found the familiarity consoling. A single at the counter was vacant, so he grabbed it. He looked around. None of the staff looked familiar. A pretty blonde working behind the counter saw Nigel take his seat. She approached him, put down a napkin, some flatware, and a glass of ice water. Terrie was printed on her nametag.

“What can I get for you? Want to start with some coffee?”

The coffee sounded good, but he passed and said, “Orange juice will be fine. Large.”

“Do you need a menu?”

“Unnecessary. Are the omelets still made with four eggs?”

“Since like forever.”

“Great. I’ll have the meat lovers with a biscuit. You pick the side.”

“Bacon sound all right?”

“Perfect.”

She left and came back with the juice. She was hustling.

Nigel stopped her. “Terrie. Hold on a sec. By chance, does Momma still work here?”

“Momma Eleanor. Sure.” She turned around to scan the room. “She must be in the back, pulling an order from the kitchen.”

“I know you’re busy, but if you get the chance, ask her to come down this way.”

Terrie nodded and bounced away, grabbing a hot pot of coffee along the way and topping off three cups without ever stopping.

Minutes later, Nigel saw Eleanor emerge from the kitchen with food. He saw Terrie stop her and nod his way. Nigel dropped his head down so she wouldn’t recognize him right away.

After she dropped off the food, she came by and stood behind him. “Was you asking for me?”

Nigel slowly turned around. As his face and smile came into view, he said, “Hello, Momma.”

When her recognition developed, she grinned, showing her white teeth, and her eyes almost bugged out. Then she started a little tippy-toe dance that included a few turns in place and an excited scream. When she finally stopped, she flung her arms around Nigel and pulled him into her bust. She buried his entire face into her hard-working, sweaty cleavage. They both laughed with excitement. The entire room watched as she kept him in her tight embrace. She spoke in what sounded like tongues, letting an Oooo! Child! sneak in from time to time and the occasional Have Mercy.
