Gunner hadn’t been wrong to worry about Logan’s wound. The drive was long, and the vibrations of it made him feel like his bones were going to shake out of his skin. He hadn’t noticed on the drive to the house, but he supposed it had everything to do with the fact that he’d been half bleeding out.

When they arrived at his apartment, taking the long way and parking in an alley across the street, he surreptitiously tried to brush his hand over it, feeling for wetness. Unfortunately, Gunner’s eyes were too keen, and he yanked Logan’s shirt up over his pecs without asking.

Logan’s breath caught in his throat as Gunner’s thick fingers touched him, but it didn’t hurt like he thought it would. The warmth of him was soothing, and since the vibration of the engine had stopped, so had the pain.

When Gunner was satisfied that Logan hadn’t torn anything, he held a hand up, then pressed his phone to his ear and had a short, sharp conversation with someone. It was less than thirty seconds, but the info seemed good enough, because he took Logan by the wrist and dragged him across the street.

He took a step back before he realized he was doing it, and he must have made some sort of noise because Gunner spun and grabbed him by the shoulders.

He didn’t attempt to say anything, but he caught Logan’s gaze with his own, and the warmth between them helped settle the way his stomach was rolling. He blinked a couple of times, then Gunner gave him a nod, the expression on his face telegraphing his question, ‘Are you okay?’

He took another breath, then nodded, and almost stepped back into Gunner’s touch when his hands fell away. Clenching his own into fists, he followed Gunner as the other man pushed the door open, and held his hand up for Logan to wait. His fingers pressed against the doorjamb, which was sharp and splintered, probably from being kicked in. The room ahead was dim, not a single light except the low-hanging sun from the front window, and he swore he could smell dirt and filth in the stale air.

He fought back his urge to fidget, his urge to turn and run, as Gunner stepped in with a weapon drawn. Logan saw the metal of it in his palm, but he didn’t look too closely—didn’t want to. He just
