She had said her goodbyes to both Victor and Tom, and when she was certain they were gone, she constructed a small but efficient timer for the bomb she had built.

Ariana walked close to the bomb where a small, but thick circle of salt lay on the battered and stained concrete floor. Crouching down beside the circle, Ariana withdrew a matchbox from her pocket. The item was made of lead encased in steel, and it served as an effective prison, when necessary.

Ariana held it out over the circle, just an inch or so above the floor, and opened it.

The aluminum ring fell and struck heavily for such a light piece of metal.

Bontoc appeared a moment later, a sour expression on his disfigured face.

“What is the meaning of this, Ariana?” he demanded.

She straightened up and moved back, out of arm’s reach. Ariana wasn’t certain if the ghost would find a way through the salt, or if some errant breeze would destroy the ring, but she wasn’t taking any chances.

“You’re not stupid,” she replied, placing the matchbox back in her pocket. “Sociopathic, but definitely not stupid. You tell me why I’m doing this.”

The feigned outrage on his face vanished, and he smiled, which, she decided was worse than his glare.

“You saw me strike down Victor,” the dead man said.

She nodded. “Why?”

“He might have harmed your brother,” Bontoc started.

“Half-brother,” she interrupted, correcting him.

He bowed his head slightly. “Half-brother. It is not up to Victor Daniels to inflict any punishment upon Stefan Korzh. That honor is reserved for Anne Le Morte and me.”

“Funny,” Ariana said, a cold feeling creeping up along her spine. “Dear old dad told me that I could take care of Stefan.”

Bontoc smirked and remained silent. But his eyes flickered to the open garage behind her.

Ariana didn’t look away from the dead man.

“I hope you’re not expecting Anne,” Ariana said. “Or her caretaker. Stefan beat the woman to death with her own shotgun. Right before he left.”

“They didn’t stop him?” the surprise in his voice held a tinge of rage.

She shook her head. “In fact, I expect Anne will shortly figure out what happened. Or at least suspect what happened.”

“He can’t have gotten away completely,” Bontoc said with a growl. “That isn’t how this is supposed to go.”

The dead man’s voice was rising, fury appearing on his face.

“He is supposed to die,” Bontoc snapped.

“Yup,” Ariana agreed. “He tends to not do that, however.”

“I’m going to kill him,” Bontoc hissed. “He’s going to die. Quickly, but I will be the one to do it!”

Ariana grinned. “No. I don’t think so.”

“Silence!” Bontoc spat.

“No, that’s not going to happen either.”

“You’re going to be dead soon, too,” the ghost said, his voice becoming low and dangerous.

“You won’t have anything to do with it,” Ariana said, walking over to the timer for the bomb.

“You’re wrong!” The dead man threw himself towards her, but the power of the salt stopped him, standing him upright as if he were caged.

Ariana blinked, then grinned.

“You won’t be smirking much longer,” Bontoc said, his voice a low guttural growl.
