Chapter Eight

Jess lay staring at the ceiling of her parents’ guest room, trying to catalogue every detail of the woman sprawled half on top of her. They’d assumed a myriad of positions over the course of hazy, sleepless hours, and she’d yet to find one that didn’t work for her on a fundamental level. At one point, they’d even made use of the shower to clean up, only to fall back into bed and get sweaty once more. Nothing sated her craving for Lauren’s skin, her mouth, her vulnerability, but the closeness she felt with Lauren curled against her side, head on her chest, leg thrown across her midsection at least offered her a few moments of peace.

“Do you remember the night you kissed me by the pool?” Lauren asked from the crook of Jess’s arm.

“Um, yeah,” Jess managed despite the way her stomach tightened at the contrast of the memory against all the things she felt in this moment. “Pretty much every day of my life.”

“But do you remember you asked me what the best part of being queer was?”

“Yes. You gave an awe-inspiring answer about the sense of community I would come to feel and be part of.”

“You’re very sweet to remember it that way, but I was full of shit.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah.” Lauren smiled against her skin. “You saw me as the older woman, but I was still just a teenager myself. Don’t get me wrong, the community is great when you’re just finding yourself, but if you asked me the same question again, I’d give a very different answer.”

“Okay.” She looked down to meet her eyes. “What’s the best part of being queer?”

The corner of her mouth gave a little twitch before she said, “Kissing girls.”

Jess laughed. “Good to know my hopes weren’t misplaced.”

“Do you still agree?”

She shrugged lightly. “I think that’s in the running, along with a couple of other things we did last night. There’s a lot of really good options to choose from.”

“So many.”

“It’s hard to choose just one of them, but—”

A shrill ring of the phone stopped her, mid-sentence.

“Uh-oh,” Lauren said, “the outside world is coming for you.”

“They can wait,” Jess grumbled.

“What time is it?”

“I don’t wanna know. Why do you think I sleep in a room with no windows?”

“Because you’re broke and living in your parents’ basement?”

“Ouch,” she said, but she couldn’t hide the humor in her voice any more than she could stop the phone from ringing.

“Either someone is calling you in the middle of the night, or it’s morning.” Lauren piled on the heap of things threatening to shatter their little cocoon. “Either way, you’re probably going to have to face it.”

She growled, unable to think of any other argument, but she threw the bunched-up comforter to the side and felt for her phone on the bedside table. Pulling the screen within view, she managed to confirm two unpleasant things at once. It was after seven o’clock in the morning, and Haley was calling her.

Lauren must’ve seen the same thing as she eased herself up to a seated position.
