Chapter Sixteen

The week brings more ass fucking, more blow jobs with Patrick. Yadda yadda yadda. He talks a little about Carol, and to be an attentive, dutiful whore, I ask questions about her favorite color, her hobbies, her top foods. Basic stuff, stuff I usually don’t give a shit about. However, thoughts of Carol have kept creeping up on me. Her shyness. The fact that she isn’t all about sex. It’s refreshing. Even in my free time, people see me as a sex object. The wolfish men in the grocery store, for example. But not Carol. Carol who hung back, Carol who…Carol who needs help. She is a woman waiting to bloom, a sexual being who needs guidance. Patrick isn’t the one for her.

The comments Patrick makes about Carol are no different from what he’s said before, but they carry additional meaning now that I know her.

For example: “She doesn’t get why I can’t be home early. I work! Duh. It’s my first fucking year!”

“If you didn’t see me, you’d be home earlier.”

Patrick gives me a black look. “Whose side are you on?”

Oops. So much for Fantasy Land, for never criticizing clients. “Just saying.”

“Whatever,” Patrick mutters angrily. He does not leave a tip, but I still plan to show up at his condo Saturday as agreed.

“You look nice,” my mother says as she kisses me goodbye on Saturday.

“Thanks, Ma.” I’m wearing a black dress carried over from my other life. I bought the dress for only a hundred dollars, and it hasn’t fallen victim to wear and tear. One of my best purchases. It’s perfect for pretty much any event, and it brings out my long legs, my auburn hair and my hazel eyes better than other dresses can. It’s a hooker dress from before I was a hooker. Ha!

“I’m glad to see you dating again,” Ma says.

I sigh. “I told you, Ma. Tonight isn’t a date. It’s more like a…” I gesture, trying to make my point. “An icebreaker. It’s a business dinner, okay?”

Ma grins. “An icebreaker with the potential for more. You want to know how I know it’s a date?”

“Oh yes, Mother, please grace me with your infinite wisdom,” I drawl. I usually don’t mind Ma living with me. She moved in after a semi-suicide attempt on my part, and I love providing for her after all she’s done for me. But, geez. Sometimes she’s annoying.

“The dress. You used to wear it for first dates you were excited about.”

I stare at my mother. At the premature lines in her face, at her saggy jowls. Her words rattle around the living room. First dates you were excited about.

Is she right? Well, maybe the old Elena did subconsciously wear this dress for first dates she was excited about. However, the new, less-improved Elena has continued to wear the dress once in a while, and certainly not for dates. Ma’s nuts.

“Don’t forget your crazy meds,” I say blithely.

Ma chuckles. “A mother knows.”

“Then a mother would know I wore this dress, let’s see, two months ago when I catered that business dinner.
