Chapter Six

Morgan flipped the switch then stood alone in the dark parlor for a moment. There was silence other than the faint voices that came from upstairs. She needed a second before she went up to face the music.

She huffed then made her way upstairs. Rhett was settled on the couch watching television. Gracie was sprawled across the rest of it, her head rested on his leg.

“Everything is locked up downstairs. Granted, we haven’t discussed supper but I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”

“It seems that we have other things to discuss first.” He laid a hand on the dog’s rump. “Do you want me to move her so you can sit down?”

Gracie lifted her head to look at him indignantly. Morgan smiled. “Not really.”

“Alright. Why not?”

Morgan pulled free one of her kitchen chairs then sat on it backwards. She heard a low growl. It didn’t come from the dog.

“If I sit down there, I’m afraid that we’ll just finish what we started downstairs. Not that I would mind that but I think that we need to talk first.”

“Good idea.” He idly rubbed Gracie’s head, which was back on his lap. “What happened down there?”

Morgan bit at her lower lip. “I’ve tried keeping quiet. I wanted to protect you. You are struggling so much. You definitely don’t need my bullshit to complicate things.”

“Okay. What bullshit are you talking about?”

She sucked in a breath. “I like you, Rhett. I don’t mean as a friend. I have since high school. I have feelings for you. Yeah. Strong ones. But it doesn’t matter. You healing is the most important thing. Please, just forget what happened.”

“I don’t think I can.”

Morgan lowered her gaze as she muttered a curse. “I’m sorry.”

“Morg, I don’t want to forget it.”

She glanced up at him. Rhett continued. “Baby, you aren’t the only one who has had feelings. I’ve loved you since those study sessions in the library.”

She smirked at him. “You proposed to Jessica.”

“Because I figured that I would never have a chance with you. You were so smart and kind.”

“So were you.”

He cocked his head at her. “Come on, Morg. That’s not true.”

“Yes, it is.”

“I wasn’t worthy of you. I’m still not.”

“I beg to differ.”

“You do, huh?”

She felt her face heat up. “So, now what? Our relationship just escalated to another level. Do we put this aside?” She paused. “Or do we pursue it?”

“What do you want to do?”

Morgan’s heart hammered in her chest. “I want to pursue it.”

Rhett smiled at her. “Great. Me too.”

“But I want to take things slower than we did downstairs.”

He scowled. “I might not be as on board with that. Why?”

She shrugged. “I want to be more than friends with benefits.”

“We are. We will be.”

“But what happens if we explore the physical and ignore our emotions? I’ve been in one of those relationships. It crashed and burned. I don’t want that with you.”

His scowl turned to an all-out frown. “You what? With who?”

She grinned at him. “No need to be jealous.
