CHAPTER 7

Jack dropped Anna off outside the Biochem building, having convinced her that it was better and safer for her not to drive to work by herself. The process of persuasion had not been without some conflict; which revealed Anna's stubborn side as much as her ability to allow reason to overrule pointless urges to prove points that didn't need proving.

"Just this time," she finally said.

Jack decided not to contradict her, and in the end they made up for the dispute. This had resulted in their clothes strewn up all over the floor of his apartment and her being late for the Monday morning staff meeting.

"Kyle is going to kill me," she said, referring to the head of Biochem, Kyle Franken.

"I doubt it."

"Since I'll be late, I might as well be even later."

"No."

"You want to get rid of me?"

"I want to set a trap for whoever is going to come to steal back that disk drive."

"You really think they will?"

"I know they will."

He lowered her bare butt onto the counter between the kitchen and the lounge, and she unwrapped her legs from his waist.

"So," she muttered, "work it is."

"Indeed."

"What are you going to do with the hard drive?"

"Take it with us and put the original one back into the computer. I'm going to mail the real one to a safe address."

"Where to?"

"I'll tell you later, when we're both functioning rationally again."

She glanced at the scattered garments on the floor.

"What a mess." She smiled and kissed him. "Gonna get me down from here and let me get to work?"

"You started it."

"I did nothing of the sort."

"You were the one who—"

She shut him up by making it impossible for him to talk.
