An hour later I was pretty much done, which was both pleasing and a little bit sad. The task had been made more difficult by the fact one arm was pretty much out of action and yet I’d still finished in under an hour. A lifetime’s possessions in a few suitcases and a handful of boxes. I could sell it as minimalism. That I only kept what I loved and needed and what, to coin a phrase, ‘brought me joy’, but even if I told that to others, I’d be lying to myself. I tried not to think about the fact that despite everything, this was it. That I’d worked my arse off for years and still didn’t actually have a place to call home. A place I could make my own. Somewhere I could come to at the end of a crappy day, or even a good day, and close the door on the world outside. That had been the plan. That had even been on the plan! But the plan most definitely hadn’t gone to plan.

A knock at the door brought me out of my thoughts before they could begin spiralling.

‘Come in.’

The door opened and Jed peeked his head in.

‘It seems very odd to be saying “come in” to you in your own house.’

He leant against the door frame, almost filling it, relaxed and ridiculously sexy. Not that he knew it. Not that it had that effect on me now. Nope. Not in the slightest. Was it fair for a man to look that good in jeans?

‘This is your space now. How’d you get on?’

I looked around from my position on the floor, next to the floor to ceiling windows that looked out on the city. ‘Pretty much done. Except this one.’ I nudged a small, bulging case with my toe. ‘I think the catches are jammed. I’ve spent twenty minutes and a month’s worth of expletives trying to get the damn thing open.’

I had no idea what was in there as Ava had obviously just grabbed my stuff as quickly as possible and things had been mixed in different cases and boxes. Which was good, actually, as at least I knew what I had now. There were a couple of things that needed mending so I’d set them aside to deal with later, i.e., when I had some money to pay someone to do it.

‘Want me to try?’

‘That’d be helpful, thanks.’

‘You should have called me.’

‘You’re here now and you were busy.’

He shot me a quick look before picking up the case but I caught it.

‘What was that look for?’

‘Nothing.’

I toed his leg where he’d sat on the thick rug next to me and balanced the case on his thighs. ‘Fibber.’

He smiled without looking, working on the latches. ‘OK. It’s just that you aren’t exactly known for your patience.’

‘Waiting four hours for a fashion show to start can take a lot of patience, actually.’

‘Fair point. Let me rephrase. If you wanted something done, you wanted it done then and there.
