Outside the airport, the two drove into Funchal. Dak had no idea where he was in the city other than the name of the café Will had given him as a place they could grab something to eat and have one of the local coffees.
Will found a parking spot four car lengths away from the café, expertly worked the hatchback into the tight opening, and killed the engine.
As heâd done for years now, Dak gave a quick survey of the immediate areaâthe street straight ahead and the opposite sidewalk, plus a look in the rearview mirrors. He didnât notice anything suspicious.
The two stepped out of the vehicle and up onto the sidewalk.
Beige buildings with terracotta rooftops crowded the street. A white sign with a picture of a baguette and a coffee cup hung out over the sidewalk sixty feet away. They watched as the front door opened and a pretty young woman in a pale blue dress carrying a paper coffee cup stepped out and turned down the sidewalk. Her long cocoa hair fluttered in the breeze, mirroring the bottom of her dressâs movements.
âHow did you know about this place?â Dak asked, turning to face the café. Behind it, the steep slopes of the island climbed upward, filled with more buildings that offered higher vistas of the sea beyond their lower neighbors.
âDude. Itâs my go-to here in Funchal. Good food, coffee, pastries. And itâs not far from where I think that dealerâs house is. You want to get a coffee before we head over there?â
Dakâs stomach grumbled at the thought of food and a jolt of caffeine. Despite time pressing against them, he knew heâd be better off having a quick bite and a cup of coffee.
Surrendering to his base needs, Dak followed his friend into the little shop and grabbed a coffee, some crusty bread, slices of white cheese, and a banana.
The two scarfed down the simple meal in short order, saying nothing until they were both finished eating.
After shoving the last piece of bread in his mouth, Dak finally spoke up as he chewed. âHow far do you think it is from here?â
Will shrugged, taking a sip of milky coffee. He swallowed then set the cup down. âTen-minute walk. Maybe fifteen. But you can see how congested the homes are here. It could be right behind us and we wouldnât see it until we basically tripped over it.â
Dak nodded. âOkay. We best get moving, then. You good?â
âYep. Iâm ready.â
The two set out from the café and turned left, heading toward the coast. The sidewalks twisted and turned, rolling up and down the undulating hillside town.
Will led the way down several streets that branched off from the main one where they started, but didnât find the art dealerâs house.
An hour passed, and with every minute that ticked by, Dak grew more impatient. His friend seemed lost in the maze of streets and buildings.
âYou sure you know where this place is?â he pressed as they turned down another street that ran parallel to the main one.
