Chapter 9

Raven

Zach slipping out of bed woke me. I wasn't sure about the time, but I knew we needed to get organized and ready to move. At some point, the government was going to hear about the coup among the rebels and decide to swoop in to see what they could scavenge from the wreckage. I didn't plan on leaving them much. At least, I wasn't going to leave people for them to torture as Gideon had done.

As soon as I thought that, another idea popped into my head. I rolled on my back to study the ceiling while I tried to think of a way to make it work. I doubted I'd be able to convince Zach to leave me behind and let me be captured by the agents. However, I needed to get inside the main government facility to get the jewel and I wasn't sure breaking in would work.

Zach came back into the room, and I turned my head to watch him approach the bed. He'd pulled his jeans on, but neglected to button them. I trailed my gaze over his body, causing the bulge behind his zipper to grow.

"Don't even think about it, Raven. We don't have time for another round at the moment." He sat on the bed and looked at me. "You're going to tell me what's going on around here. I need to know everything, or I'm walking."

His threat caused my heart to skip a beat. I shouldn't have gotten so attached to him that the thought of him not being with me caused panic to dance in my soul. Reaching out, I took his hand in mine and linked our fingers.

::It's hard to spill secrets I've kept since I was a child and watched my parents leave me behind.::

"I don't get why your parents left you. Why any of the Opalite parents left their children."

::If you had children, wouldn't you do everything in your power to make sure they lived? My parents knew humans weren't going to allow us to live, or if they did, we'd be kept in cages for the rest of our lives. Opalites, even in this hostile environment, can live a long time. Far longer than humans. They didn't want us to end up caged like animals.::

Zach stared at our entwined fingers. "Why did you come here? I've never been able to figure out why such an advanced civilization as yours would chose to come to Earth, especially if you weren't interested in conquest."

::We were interested in studying you, like anthropologists travel to distant countries to study their cultures. You're a primitive society compared to ours, and the adults wanted to learn more about you.::

"Yet they brought their children. Didn't they think we might resist or fight back?"

I shrugged, not knowing the answer to that. I had most of the memories from my parents in my mind, but some things they didn't tell me. ::I'm not sure why we were brought along, although some were born during the flight here.
