15. The Henchmen

The monitors alerted Head Nurse Ashley that her patient was tossing and turning in bed. Comatose patients don’t move and are completely unresponsive. She hurried into the room to see what was going on.

She looked at Nancy and was surprised to see eyes staring back at her. It was the first time her patient had been awake, since her admission to the hospital.

"Where am I?" Nancy asked in a weak voice.

The nurse gave her a quick recap but was careful not to divulge anything that might distress her patient. She pressed the button and summoned Nurse Trent to the room. Upon his arrival, she told him to get the doctor right away.

She turned back to Nancy and asked a few questions to see what she remembered. It was as if recent events had been erased from her mind. The last thing she recalled was returning home from the cruise.

Dr. Showkeir arrived and checked Nancy's vitals. She ran tests and confirmed Nancy was experiencing short-term memory loss.

“Only time will tell if she regains her memory. We'll keep her here until she gets her strength back. Contact her children as soon as possible. They'll be happy to hear the good news and seeing a loved one may help jar Nancy's memory,” said Dr. Showkeir.

The doctor made sure her patient didn't have any more questions before leaving the room. She spoke with the cops who were charged with protecting Nancy and brought them up to speed.

She turned to Nurse Ashley and said, “Keep a close watch on those monitors and call me if anything changes. When Nancy is released, suggest to her relatives they take her to some familiar places. It may help her get her memory back faster. She'll be more comfortable with a loved one than a cop escorting her."

It didn't take long for word to get around the hospital that Nancy had come out of her coma, but lost her memory. This news found its way to Blake & Josh.

They were cautiously happy. As brain surgeons, they were well aware of the unpredictability of memory loss. Nancy could regain her memory at any moment or it may never come back.

"We're off the hook, for now," Josh said.

Blake wasn't that quick to celebrate. He knew Nancy might still be able to ID him.

"We're not out of the woods yet, Josh. I still think it's best to eliminate her. I've contacted the henchmen and they've agreed to do the job. The only problem is they're getting greedy. They want more money, lots more money."

Joe and Rufus sat in an upscale restaurant. They had been treating themselves to some of the finer things in life since the money was flowing in. It felt so good to finally have the burden of financial issues lifted from their shoulders.

"Can you believe those doctors?" Joe asked. "They are pushing the envelope this time."

"Yeah, man. I don't think they care about anyone, but themselves. We're taking all of the risks while they look squeaky clean."

"How are we going to do it, Rufus? The doctors didn't offer any ideas.
