Chapter Twelve

London, England

Angelus found Spike in Drusilla's room the next evening and shoved him unceremoniously out of the bed. Drusilla, putting her hair up at the vanity, shot Angelus a reproving look.

"He's mine to play with, you know," she said frostily, and Angelus snorted.

"I am right here," Spike said from the floor, where he was trying to extricate himself from the bedcovers.

"I see you're feeling better, Dru," Angelus said, ignoring Spike's protest.

"Oh, yes," she said, her eyes shining. "My Spike brought me a lovely present, all that pain and fear. It was quite tasty."

Angelus made a sound that might have indicated understanding or slight disapproval. "Well," he said, "I'm glad to see you're up to going out again. I believe Spike needs some new clothes."

Drusilla gave a small hop in her chair. "Ooooh, shopping!" she said, clapping her hands.

"Shopping?" Spike, finally out from under the bedclothes and getting dressed, stopped with his pants half-buttoned. "All the shops will be closed."

"Oh, I know a few places," Angelus said, his eyes twinkling. "Don't worry. We'll have you into something fashionable in no time."

"Something fashionable!" Spike looked down at his tweed suit, which, he had to admit, was rather showing the need for a good brush-up. "What's wrong with this suit?"

"Well, it's hardly going to do to wear to a ball or to the theater, now is it?" Angelus said. He flashed Spike a saucy grin.

"Ball?" Spike shook his head. "I think not. They barely tolerated me at balls when I was alive. Don't really feature getting into one now I'm dead."

"But Spike," Angelus said, his grin getting wider. "I believe you have some unfinished business with society."

"Yes," Dru said, putting the last pin into her hair and patting the curls into place. "That nasty girl with the big eyes, you're not done with her." She came to where Spike was trying to tie his cravat and took the cloth out of his hands, and in a matter of seconds the thing was knotted properly.

"What, you mean Cecily?" Spike's eyes narrowed at the thought, and he smiled.

"Yes," Dru said. "Horrid girl. She hurt my knight, and she must be punished." She gave the cravat a last tug. "There. My Angel is right, though. You do need new clothes. These are beginning to smell." She picked up her hat and began to pin it on.

"They were beginning to smell when you buried him, dear." Darla, standing in the door, wrinkled her nose and managed to look down it at Spike, though he was taller than she by several inches. "Are we going shopping?" She looked up at Angelus.

He rolled his eyes. "Yes, we are," he said with a resigned sigh. He offered her his arm. "I was only planning to go to the tailor's, but I suppose we can stop by Madame Verdi's afterward."

Darla took his arm and gave him a radiant smile. "Darling, you do know how to pamper a girl," she said, and led him out of the room.

Drusilla took Spike's arm and snuggled close to his side.
