Chapter Eleven

Chester Walgren opened his corner eatery, The Nosh, well before I was born. By the time I came around, the deli was well established as being the best place to grab a sandwich, and of course, a pickle from the giant glass jar they kept on the counter. Ever since I’d been old enough to chew, I’d gone there at least once a week. Even though Misty Cooper’s revelations were weighing heavily on me, the lure of my favorite sandwich temporarily distracted me.

I moved up in line and smiled at Chester’s daughter, Delia. There was no need to look at the chalkboard menu hanging behind her. I knew exactly what I wanted.

“Corned beef on rye, with kettle chips, and a pickle.”

Was it the healthiest choice on the menu? Heck no. That was part of the fun. I stepped aside so Summer and Meadow could place their order. The place was packed, as usual, but I spotted a table out on the sidewalk with enough seats for all of us. I scurried over to claim it. Penny hopped up into the seat next to me and licked her muzzle in anticipation. I couldn’t blame her. If I could’ve managed it, I would have. The Nosh was seriously that good.

“No, don’t get up,” Summer said, approaching with her arms full. “I’ve got it. Your order, my lady.”

I giggled before hopping up to help her unload the two baskets and drinks she was carrying.

“Ooh, thanks for the soda,” I said. “I totally forgot about a drink.”

Meadow joined us, and Winnie’s eyes were gleaming as she watched Meadow grab a chip.

“What’d you get, Meadow?”

“My favorite, pastrami on whole wheat, with mustard.”

My stomach rumbled as I unwrapped my sandwich. By unspoken agreement, the three of us tucked into our food, tabling our serious discussion until after we ate. I took an enormous bite and closed my eyes in bliss.

“Hey, Autumn. I thought that was you,” Gabe said, his voice coming from my left. “Ladies.”

Son of a witch! He’d picked an awkward time to show up. I struggled to chew and held my hand over my mouth to be more ladylike. Once I’d swallowed, I motioned to the seat next to me, currently occupied by Penny.

“You can sit here if you’d like. Have you eaten?”

Penny shot me a look that promised retribution before she sighed and climbed over from her seat to sit in my lap.

“The indignity,” she muttered. “There’d better be extra corned beef in it for me after that.”

I stroked her head and slipped her a piece of meat, silencing her complaints. Well, at least temporarily. Knowing Penny, as soon as she was done chewing, they’d start up again.

“I haven’t. I was walking by, exploring downtown, and spotted you. You have a little, um, sauce on your cheek, right here,” Gabe said, grinning as he pointed at his cheek.

Could this day get any better? I grabbed a napkin and wiped my cheek while Summer and Meadow giggled in the background.

“This place is the best.
