Chapter 15
When Connor heard the soft knock at the door, he was tempted to ignore it. The tapping was too timid to be anyone from the Pack, and if he left the stove now, the omelets he was making for breakfast would almost certainly burn. When the knock came again, he leaned out a little way from the stove, trying to put some distance between him and all those scrumptious peppers and onions sizzling in the frying pan so he could get a sniff of whoever was out there. But before he could, Kat was walking across the living room, heading for the door.
âI got it,â she called over her shoulder even as Connor had an urge to tell her to check the peephole before opening it. Like she was a kid.
The sound of popping grease forced him to turn his attention back to the eggs, making him miss the door opening. He heard Katâs welcoming voice, then a murmured response so low and timid that even his werewolf ears couldnât clearly make it out. But as he picked up the visitorâs scent, he decided he recognized it from somewhere. It was right on the tip of his tongue.
Or the tip of his nose maybe.
He quickly finished the omelet in the pan, flipped it over without making too much of a mess, then added it to the plate warming in the oven along with the first one heâd made. He walked into the living room and almost fell over when he saw his sister standing there with an amused and somewhat bewildered expression on her face. A little shorter than Kat, with long, wavy blond hair, she was wearing distressed jeans and a graphic print tee.
âJenna?â he said in surprise. âWhat are you doing here?â
His heart clenched in his chest as his sister winced and took half a step back, the almost happy look she had on her face while talking to Kat instantly disappearing to be replaced with hurt. Wanting to make up for the slight, even if unintended, Connor stepped forward and swept his sister up in a big hug, hoping sheâd accept that he was happy to see her, even if heâd been caught a bit off guard.
âSorry. That came out all wrong,â he apologized, picking her up off the floor a little as he hugged her. âYou know Iâm thrilled to see you, right? Itâs been a while.â
Jenna whacked his shoulder until he put her down, but when he did, it was to see her smiling again. That was something at least. He liked to see Jenna smileâshe didnât do it often.
âYeah, it has been a while,â she complained. âBut whose fault is that? You never come to visit me anymore.â
He opened his mouth to apologize again because Jenna was absolutely correct. The truth was that heâd been avoiding a trip out to California to see her for a long time now. But before he got the words out, he caught sight of Kat standing there.
âOh,
