CHAPTER 5

Nick and I got on the plane at 11:15 in the morning. In my new outfit I felt like someone extremely important, kind of like Oprah, but with way less power and a lot more to learn.

The inside of the plane looked like a tiny apartment, and my jaw hit the floor when I saw the interior. There was a couch, a table with two chairs, two recliners, a television, and a bar area. I had expected it to look like all the other planes I’d seen in the movies, with two rows of seats and overhead compartments.

“This is your plane?” I asked Nick.

“I wish,” he said. “It’s my boss’ plane. Whenever I go to see him he sends it for me. He doesn’t like his employees to have to go through airports and deal with the TSA and all that.”

“Wow! That’s nice of him.”

“No. He just likes to be in control of things,” he explained. “Which is understandable when you’re dealing with millions of dollars in cocaine on a daily basis.”

We each took a seat on the couch, and on the way there Nick told me about his boss. Until now I had never even heard his real name, Rodolfo Velazquez. He said he was very smart, but very paranoid because not only did he run a cocaine empire, he also used it. He had a collection of guns and he carried one around at all times, which he sometimes pointed, randomly, at anyone who might be in the room. This news did not make me feel any better.

Nick informed me that Velazquez had a network of people who smuggled cocaine into the country at a number of different locations. He was the Illinois man for a long time, but when his California connection was arrested and convicted of murder, drug trafficking, and money laundering, he had moved to California to take over in his place.

“Have you ever killed anyone?” I asked. It wasn’t a question I thought to ask when he had first told me about what he did.

“Not personally. I have seen people killed though.”

“For what?” I asked, uneasy.

“Rodolfo isn’t the kind of man who lets things go. When people betray him he makes an example of them,” he said.

I nodded and thought about that new bit of information long and hard. It had me officially scared out of my mind to meet him. I decided that I wasn’t going to say anything unless he specifically spoke to me. I didn’t want to say or do the wrong thing, and I really didn’t want to give Rodolfo any reason to shoot me.

I was freaked out, but Nick saw the trepidation on my face and moved to comfort me.

“You don’t have anything to worry about. He’s not going to bother you. Trust me,” he said.

“You just said he likes to point guns at people. I’m pretty sure that if he points a gun at me, I’ll shit a brick.”

He laughed at my comment. “He’s never pointed a gun at me, and I’ve never seen him point one at a woman.
