Chapter 23

Bianca and Geek have withdrawn from me completely, barely acknowledging my existence.

I tried to speak to Bianca yesterday, but that didn’t go so well…

I round a corner and walk smack-bang into Bianca.

“Sorry.” Her voice is sullen, and she ducks her head, sweeping past me.

“Bianca, wait.” I grab her arm, then let go instantly.

She pauses, but doesn’t turn to face me.

“Can we…” I rub my scar, then realise what I’m doing and drop my hand. “Can we talk about what happened?”

Her lips press against mine in the training room.

I don’t return the kiss.

I wipe. My. Mouth.

Idiot.

My stomach pinches tight.

“We don’t really have anything to talk about, do we?” she asks.

I rock back a step, like I’m dodging a witch-strike. “We’re still friends. I still care—”

She turns now, a guarded look on her face I’ve never seen before. She twists her ring round and round her finger. “The only person you care about is yourself.” She doesn’t even sound angry, just tired.

I suck in a breath through my teeth, the pinching in my gut getting tighter and tighter. “That’s not fair.”

She sighs, heavy and awkward. “I asked you about Layla and you swore there was nothing going on between you.”

“There isn’t.”

She arches an eyebrow at me.

“There wasn’t… I… Look, I don’t know what’s happening between Layla and I, if I’m honest.”

She shrugs. “It’s a little late for honesty.”

“Bianca, pl—”

“I have to go. I’m sorry, but I can’t do this.” She turns and drifts further down the hallway.

“I hate seeing you like this,” I say.

She doesn’t break her stride.

I raise my voice a little. “I just want to move past this and get back to the way things were.”

Still drifting, and then she disappears around the next bend in the hallway.

She’s gone, just like that.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you,” I say to the empty corridor.

It’s a little late for honesty.
