Tom read the words quickly, then again slowly. He didn’t know who’d chosen them. He didn’t think Michael had any family. They seemed fitting, if a little formal. Perhaps Michael would’ve wanted something more personal, but they would never know. Tom tightened his grip on his sisters and put his head on Janie’s.

“Guys?” Uncle Jim came up and crouched beside them. “I think you should come back to the tent now. It looks like it’s going to storm.” It was true. Dark clouds were building up in the sky, and the air had taken on a damp chill.

“I want to stay here.” Cassie and Janie had spoken at the same time.

“Are you sure?” Uncle Jim asked them as everyone else rose to their feet.

“Yeah,” Cassie said.

“Okay then,” Uncle Jim said, turning to leave. He then turned back and put his arms around both girls. “I’m sorry. Don’t stay too long. Storm’s coming in.”

The girls nodded. Slowly, everyone turned to leave. Tom was last of all, even as he turned to leave, his gaze lingered on his sisters, kneeling beside Michael’s grave with their heads bowed. He could feel their grief, but more than that he could feel the rage and guilt building in Cassie’s mind, and it worried him. He wished he could understand, but even telepathy had its limits. It didn’t seem right, leaving them there when he knew how they were feeling.

“Come on,” Jack said, putting a hand on Tom’s shoulder. “They’ll be all right.”

Tom followed Jack to their tent, wishing he could be sure Jack was right.
