FORTY
THE PROBLEM STUCK with her for the rest of the night and into the next day. She didnât know how to investigate a murder, and she didnât know how to follow men without them knowing that she was there. Sheâd seen plenty of television shows, but those fictional characters seemed to find what they wanted as soon as they needed it, as if they had magical investigative powers. She was out on the roads, doing her job, but she was barely paying attention to what was in front of her. Her mind was fully occupied with Deuce, Bones, and how she could find out what they were up to.
The sun was nearing the horizon and she was just about to head back for a late dinner when her headlights picked out a huddle of men standing off the side of the road. She recognized some of the figures standing there. She pulled the truck off to the shoulder and parked it, then swung down from the cab.
Griffin was standing in the center of a circle that included David and a few other men that she recognized from the gatherings sheâd attended. Neither Deuce nor Bones were there, which was a little disappointing. Still, she walked slowly towards the crew and received a few nods as she joined them.
Griffin was looking off to the side. A sharp scent of nicotine in the air announced Bullâs imminent arrival before he stepped into view.
âHere comes trouble,â Griffin growled affectionately.
âI donât look for trouble,â Bull replied in his deep baritone. âBut it does always seem to follow me around.â
Griffin gave him an appraising look. âHow bad is it?â
Bull shrugged.
âBad enough. Itâs not a threat, not on its own. But people are going to be looking for how we respond.â
Griffin sighed. âI hate this shit.â
âNobody likes it. Thatâs why they call it âshit.â You bury it before the stink gets too bad.â
âItâs a waste of time.â
Bull shrugged again. âDoesnât matter whether it is or not. They disrespect us, we teach them not to. Thatâs the way things work.â
âHow many?â Griffin asked.
âSix or seven. Maybe as many as ten. No oneâs seen more than two of them together, but from the descriptions thereâs been a lot of them. Not much doubt that theyâre coordinating with one another, which means theyâre members of the same pack, and that makes it a direct challenge. We have to answer.â
Griffin cursed under his breath. âHow are you planning to deal with it?â he asked.
âIn ones and twos. I donât want to give them a chance to make it a pitched fight, pack against pack. Weâll take them down a bit at a time. If theyâre smart, theyâll back off after first blood. If theyâre notâ¦â he said, letting his voice trail off. The silence spoke for him.
Griffin gave him a nod, and Bull headed back the same way heâd come, giving Sam a humorless smile as he passed. Not knowing what else to do, she smiled back. The leash on her wrist was practically quivering with impatience.
