“You’re trying to force your way through the obstacles,” Elder Marcus called as I attempted to batter my way through a course he had set up while also fighting off other specialists from Sanctuary. Trees swung, connected from ropes attempting to knock me off course while practice arrows and javelins were flung from those hidden in the surrounding forest. I wasn’t allowed to use any advanced technique other than that of the warrior while training with Marcus. “Brute force is fine in certain situations, but grace and serenity will serve you far better. Flow through the motions like water through a river, letting the current of battle guide your movements. The House of Fire may have taught you to use your strength directly, but there is far more to it than just force.”

I hurdled a javelin that streaked inches from my knees, ducked an arrow, and cut clean though a tree heading for me. The blow from cutting through the tree left me open to an attack from Cal, who had been mirroring me, waiting for an opening to blast me off balance. He slammed home a club to my midsection, knocking the wind from me and bringing me to a stop. I groaned in pain as I struggled to regain my breath. “What’s the point of having the increased strength of a warrior if you don’t use it?” I said through ragged breaths.

Marcus helped me to my feet. “That’s exactly what I’m trying to get you to realize. The strength that your body is granted is not only meant for crashing through objects or to force your way through a situation. It strengthens every part of you. You can channel the flow of Ilamantium to act as a shield, reinforcing your body so nothing can hurt you. You can empower your muscles to move far faster than any other could follow. The options are only limited by what your mind can imagine, but you need to realize there are always more paths to take than the one that is directly in front of you. Remember, water can flow through many routes, following an existing path or forging a new one. It has the power to give life or the power to destroy. Water flows through all, and without it we could not survive,” Marcus said, reciting the motto of the House of Water. “Be like water, allowing your body to flow through its natural course. When you can, flow around the objects that block your path, using the power of the warrior to guide your body.
