Hours ago, when Stephanie had typed “Japanese wizard” into the search engine, the first thing that came up was “onmyōji.” On top of being masters of magic, onmyōji were dedicated civil servants, having a ministry dedicated to them in government. Their job was divination, protecting a house from evil spirits, and summoning beings from the other world. And they existed to this day—not counting the ministry.

“That seems like a good suspect,” Stephanie had said.

“Yeah,” Rafaela replied, “but what do we do about it? According to this, an onmyōji’s greatest strength is divination. That means they can see us coming. Surprise is my greatest strength, and this takes that away.”

“He didn’t count on you stopping him,” Stephanie said. “There’s a weakness there you can exploit.”

“True,” Rafaela said. “What else can this machine dig up?”

“They found a lot of links to anime and RPG fan pages, but nothing of real substance. A deep dive into onmyōji didn’t reveal any way to defeat them, but there wasn’t any literature of them needing to be defeated. They were well-behaved bureaucrats.”

And now that Rafaela had an idea who she’d be facing, she felt comfortable sending Stephanie on her way and going back to her van and hotel, where she could finally brush her teeth and wash off the sex, which she positively reeked of. That she was kind of sad about, but there would be plenty of time to make more of that scent.

As she dressed, she stood in front of the mirror, a dilemma in her heart. Should she wear an orange sweater, like she was supposed to? Or the black, long-sleeved T-shirt designed to make eye contact impossible. She went for the T-shirt, since she wasn’t really working today, only researching. She also went for the jeans, which fit despite the fact that she couldn’t remember the last time she’d worn them. They didn’t have any pockets to put props into, but they did make her ass look amazing.

She did, however, pack a bag full of herbs, powders, oils, holy water, smudge sticks, and two lighters. A dog had found her last night, so that meant the onmyōji, if that’s who she was facing, knew who she was and where she was. She couldn’t be too careful.

She had a few hours before Ken got out of work, so she drove to a different branch of the library, but found nothing. She tried another branch, and another. She then decided to go the Books & Stuff at the mall, because it had a pretty decent folklore collection. To reach it, she had to pass through the political biographies aisle, and she froze.

“Well that’s unusual,” she said.

A tingle crept through her fingers and toes, and the hairs on her arms stood up. There was magic here, violent magic. Powerful. The kind that would need a staff. But the Sentinels weren’t brazen enough to walk into a mall wielding their staffs, were they?

This troubled her, but she dismissed it—there was nothing she could do about it, and she had enough to worry about.
