Cora stepped through the portal and immediately put her hands up when she found herself staring down the barrel of a shotgun. Relief crossed Duncan’s face, and he blew out a loud breath.

“Jesus, Coraline,” he said as he lowered the weapon. “You could give a man some warning.”

She flashed him a crooked smile. “And how do you suggest I do that without cell service? Smoke signals maybe?”

“Fair enough,” he grumbled.

Cora turned back to the portal. “It’s okay. Come on through.”

A look of concern crossed the librarian’s face. “Who are you speaking to, Agent Pratt?”

As the words fell from his mouth, the former Seers and Sentinels filed through the portal and into the Repository, and a look of distress crossed the librarian’s face.

“Oh, dear,” he said.

“It’s all right, Duncan,” Cora told him. “These people left their orders. We’ve all come together to fight the final conflict. To defeat Uriel and Dierdre.”

“As agreeable as that sounds, nobody is supposed to know about the Repository, Agent Pratt,” he said, tightness in his voice. “Why have you brought them all here?”

“Because we’re past the point of keeping secrets,” she said. “If we’re going to win the coming fight, we all need to be on the same page and working as one.”

The man ran a hand through his hair, a mix of emotions crossing his face. Cora could see he was angry that she’d violated the Repository by bringing everybody with her. His sole duty as the Keeper was to make sure it remained a secret—to keep everything within its walls safe and unknown to anybody. But she could also see a hint of relief filling his eyes as well.

Once Cora got Kimberly on board, they worked out the logistics. The group divided into two teams of twelve each, mixing up the former Seers and Sentinels, leaving fifteen behind at the cave to watch over and protect the civilians. Kimberly and Maddy both were hesitant to blend the teams, but Cora put her foot down and insisted that they don’t segregate by their former orders. If they were going to get through this, they had to learn to work together.

“What is this place?” Mercy asked as she stepped up beside Cora.

“This is the Repository. This is where the actual histories of Storyville, the Seers, the Sentinels, and all the artifacts from bygone ages are kept,” Cora replied. “And this is Duncan Daugherty, the Keeper of the Repository.”

He gave Mercy an uncertain smile but nodded politely, still clearly uncomfortable with what was going on. Duncan was socially awkward at best, and being around so many people was obviously an unpleasant experience for him. But he was going to have to get used to it.

“The actual histories?” Mercy asked.

“Duncan,” Cora said. “Can you explain the purpose of the Repository to Mercy?”

He cleared his throat. “Of course.”

It was a subject he was knowledgeable and passionate about, so the words came tumbling out of his mouth freely, and Mercy actually looked interested. Cora turned and walked over to where Kimberly and Maddy stood together speaking in low tones with a couple of former Seers.
