The weeks were flying by faster than Lisabelle liked. It was already officially summer. How had that happened? The trees were still in full bloom when they landed. Now, fruit swelled where the blossoms once were.

As for Zan, he was changing nearly as fast as the ripening world around the cottage. He wasn't skin and bones anymore. That didn't mean he was anywhere near the proper weight for a Vekriel of his height, but his clothes no longer hung on him as if he were nothing more than a coat hanger keeping them off the floor. That was one of the good changes.

Another was that the physical therapy had given him back far more mobility and promised a near-complete recovery in his movements and gait. He'd used that in conjunction with one of the more negative aspects of his healing to go stomping out the door not five minutes ago.

She should be happy about that, too, when it came down to it. It had taken weeks before he was comfortable stepping foot into the outside world. Now, there he was, pacing the lawn and glaring at the flowers. That they'd butted heads for a solid fifteen minutes before he stormed out should also make her happy. It meant that he was mentally strong enough to stand up to her and trusted her enough not to punish him for it. That didn't keep her from pacing the solarium and wanting to kick the equipment there.

Her aggravation stemmed from more than just her irritation at him for trying to push himself too hard too fast. In truth, she was frustrated at herself just as much as she was at him. After she’d kissed his cheek in the kitchen what seemed like forever ago, she’d fought an internal war over what had driven her to go that far with him. Had she regretted it? No, but she wasn’t sure what she was supposed to do now, and she wasn’t the only one.

After that gentle kiss on Zan’s scarred cheek, he’d started to pull her in close before rushing out of the kitchen. In the first few days that followed, Zan had been careful to keep his distance and hardly spoke. Then one evening, their hands had brushed, and he’d wound up entwining his fingers with hers. Time had stopped at that moment. Lisabelle’s heart had raced even more after Zan had turned to face her, his good eye shining with so much emotion it had left a longing ache in her chest.

Then he’d let her go and rushed off to hide in his room again.

That wasn’t the only time such an interaction had occurred. She’d lost count of how many times now one of them had wound up touching shoulders or brushing fingers while they’d been going through the house. The tension between them had risen drastically. It wasn’t helped that they shared their meals sitting side by side in the kitchen.

Then last night had happened, and Lisabelle had gone to bed more confused than she’d been thus far when it came to Zan.
