Warden’s mood was complete shit. He had spent the day running down a flood of unauthorized weapons. That had meant getting names the hard way and putting down a few bad apples. It was exhausting. Almost eleven years had passed since Conor died and Rian took his place. Still, the fucking Italians kept trying to push into their territory. They still didn’t get it. They still wanted to treat Rian like he was wet behind the ears. The truth was, they were lucky Warden had come for them. Death had been swift. Rian took his time. He enjoyed it. Still, days like this one always left him in a black mood. He searched the house from top to bottom, hoping to convince Sean to take him up on that dinner date. He needed Sean’s goofy smile tonight. Unfortunately, even though his car was in the garage, Sean was nowhere to be seen.

Finally, Warden found Anton standing guard outside Rian’s office. “Hey. Have you seen Sean?”

Anton looked uncomfortable. “Yeah. He’s at the pool.”

Warden hadn’t thought about the indoor pool. No one used it since Sean left. Sean was the only one who swam laps. He nodded his thanks and turned away.

“Ward.”

Warden turned back with his eyebrows raised.

Anton shifted from foot to foot. “Just a heads up. When we went to the studio with Kylian today, the topic of Conor came up while we were talking.” A horrible feeling overcame Warden. Anton winced. “I thought he knew.”

It was like getting hit by a truck and not dying. Warden walked away without acknowledging the words. There was nothing to say. It wasn’t Anton’s fault. Warden had made his bed. He wouldn’t run from the consequences. Still, it got harder to breathe with each step he took toward the pool. Instead of finding Sean swimming, he found him fully dressed and sitting on a lounge chair. His gaze was locked on the water. He wasn’t blinking. It was like he had checked out.

“Hey.”

At his greeting, Sean blinked. His head slowly turned Warden’s way. A sweet smile touched his lips. “Hey. I’d planned to see if you wanted to get something to eat when I got off tonight, but Rian said you were dealing with the Italians again.”

Warden didn’t know how to react. This wasn’t the greeting he expected. He chose to follow Sean’s lead. “Yeah. I got back about twenty minutes ago.”

Sean glanced at his watch. “Damn. I’ve been sitting here longer than I thought. You’ve probably already eaten.”

Warden shook his head. Everything was surreal as hell. He kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. “I came looking for you to see if you wanted to have dinner with me.”

A smile exploded across Sean’s face. “Great minds.” His gaze moved down Warden’s body. “You look like you’ve just showered. Are you ready to go?”

Warden nodded. The tension was killing him. “Sure. I’ll drive.” That way, Sean couldn’t leave him on the side of the road.

Sean stood and headed past him to the door. Warden snagged his arm before he got away.
