Wardenâs mood was complete shit. He had spent the day running down a flood of unauthorized weapons. That had meant getting names the hard way and putting down a few bad apples. It was exhausting. Almost eleven years had passed since Conor died and Rian took his place. Still, the fucking Italians kept trying to push into their territory. They still didnât get it. They still wanted to treat Rian like he was wet behind the ears. The truth was, they were lucky Warden had come for them. Death had been swift. Rian took his time. He enjoyed it. Still, days like this one always left him in a black mood. He searched the house from top to bottom, hoping to convince Sean to take him up on that dinner date. He needed Seanâs goofy smile tonight. Unfortunately, even though his car was in the garage, Sean was nowhere to be seen.
Finally, Warden found Anton standing guard outside Rianâs office. âHey. Have you seen Sean?â
Anton looked uncomfortable. âYeah. Heâs at the pool.â
Warden hadnât thought about the indoor pool. No one used it since Sean left. Sean was the only one who swam laps. He nodded his thanks and turned away.
âWard.â
Warden turned back with his eyebrows raised.
Anton shifted from foot to foot. âJust a heads up. When we went to the studio with Kylian today, the topic of Conor came up while we were talking.â A horrible feeling overcame Warden. Anton winced. âI thought he knew.â
It was like getting hit by a truck and not dying. Warden walked away without acknowledging the words. There was nothing to say. It wasnât Antonâs fault. Warden had made his bed. He wouldnât run from the consequences. Still, it got harder to breathe with each step he took toward the pool. Instead of finding Sean swimming, he found him fully dressed and sitting on a lounge chair. His gaze was locked on the water. He wasnât blinking. It was like he had checked out.
âHey.â
At his greeting, Sean blinked. His head slowly turned Wardenâs way. A sweet smile touched his lips. âHey. Iâd planned to see if you wanted to get something to eat when I got off tonight, but Rian said you were dealing with the Italians again.â
Warden didnât know how to react. This wasnât the greeting he expected. He chose to follow Seanâs lead. âYeah. I got back about twenty minutes ago.â
Sean glanced at his watch. âDamn. Iâve been sitting here longer than I thought. Youâve probably already eaten.â
Warden shook his head. Everything was surreal as hell. He kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. âI came looking for you to see if you wanted to have dinner with me.â
A smile exploded across Seanâs face. âGreat minds.â His gaze moved down Wardenâs body. âYou look like youâve just showered. Are you ready to go?â
Warden nodded. The tension was killing him. âSure. Iâll drive.â That way, Sean couldnât leave him on the side of the road.
Sean stood and headed past him to the door. Warden snagged his arm before he got away.
