It was the connection to Venice that they were looking for.

TWENTY-FOUR

Terate, Italy

8:17 AM

Cora sat in front of Ivan’s laptop at the small kitchen table, combing through what felt like the millionth financial database that she had access to thanks to her job at the accounting firm.

Ivan had told her everything he knew about how the Dieci functioned in terms of money transfers, and she was using that information to see if she could track down a financial trail. But they hid their tracks well, and she wasn’t finding anything.

She leaned back in her chair, tears pricking at her eyes. Hours of stress and worry had taken their toll. Ivan had just left to head into town to replenish their supplies. He hadn’t heard from Robert at all, so Cora was left wondering if her daughter and husband were safe, or even alive. She pushed back against that terrifying thought, getting to her feet and moving over to the coffeemaker to make herself a cup, needing to give her mind a break.

Looking out at the countryside through the kitchen window, she thought about how in different circumstances this might be a pleasant vacation. She and Robert had gone to Europe together only once, before Adrian was born, despite his status as a poor graduate student and Cora still being early in her career. They’d saved their pennies and taken a month to explore England, France and Italy.

They’d enjoyed their travels so much that they’d promised each other to retire together somewhere in Europe during their golden years. She’d thought about that promise many times in the years after Robert went missing, with the persistent—and ridiculous—thought that her husband couldn’t be dead because they were going to retire in Europe together.

Cora wiped away her tears as she poured her coffee into a mug before making her way to the back door. She needed air and intended to walk the trail through the woods that Ivan had shown her. Like a concerned parent, he’d made her promise not to walk far and to maintain awareness of her surroundings. She understood his concern, but after just a couple of days of being here, she felt as safe as one could under these circumstances. The farmhouse was isolated, and she hadn’t seen another soul other than Ivan. She just wished she knew for certain if Robert and Adrian were safe.

By the time she’d walked a bit down the trail, taking in the fresh air of the day, she felt calmer, and once again determined to keep looking into this organization. While her husband and daughter were out saving the world, she could do her part to help.

Cora returned to the farmhouse, stunned to see Ivan standing by the backdoor, his eyes wild with panic. At the sight of her, he stalked forward, roughly grabbing her arm and dragging her back inside, where he finally released her.

“Where did you go?” he snarled, his accent thicker than usual, looking so furious that Cora took a step back in fear.
