JULES LOOKED AT THE bedside clock. It was the evening hour of nine. She thought of A.J. and the memorial for Arthur, which would be just about over by now. Tears stung the back of her throat as she thought of her father-in-law and how much she was going to miss him... how much she already missed A.J. Everything had blown up in her face, and it was all caused by her own insecurities and jealousy over a situation that hadn’t really happened. Jules squeezed her eyes shut, wishing she could take back the events of the last few days, will herself to be in her office at the gallery and to the time when she first doubted A.J. If she had it all to do again, she wouldn’t spy on her husband from the window of a restaurant, but instead trust him and his love for her. She had weakened the marriage by jumping to the wrong conclusions, destroying what she and A.J. had. Now, how was she ever going to make things right?

She shivered and reached for her robe. Old houses were always drafty, and the autumn night had brought a chill. Jules made her way downstairs to check the thermostat, and as she rounded the corner, she heard Khandi’s laughter, light and lilting—the kind of merriment a young woman projects when she’s trying to be noticed by a man.

Jules smiled to herself as she witnessed the rituals of a new relationship, one now manifesting itself between Khandi and Van. Love in the making. It was all so exciting in the beginning: the attraction of a new and unique person, the flirting, the long talks; the wonderful and magical part of wanting to know everything about each other. Jules remembered it well, as it wasn’t too long ago she and A.J. felt the same. They couldn’t get enough of each other, couldn’t bear to be apart. How the hell had it changed so quickly?

Jules sighed, found the thermostat, raised it a notch, and returned to her bedroom. She had grown to like both Khandi and Van, each one nice, intelligent and imaginative in different ways. She was sure the combination would be an asset to the art retreat and keep things running smoothly.

Once again in her room Jules stood before the vanity. The beautiful antique piece seemed to come alive. Running her hand over the light wood finish, she let her fingers trace the flowers engraved around a drawer handle. When the compartment opened, the slight aroma of heather filled her senses. It was obvious the previous owner had lined the drawer with the pleasing scent.

Jules opened another drawer, then another, and another. The third drawer held a small, black book... a diary. Slowly Jules opened the journal. The yellow, stained pages were filled with the dainty scrawls of an elegant script. She turned to the first page, dated January 1894. Taking a seat on the padded window cushion, Jules began to read:

I, Calissta Montgomery, pray with all that is holy, that the New Year will be better than the two that have preceded it.
