Chapter Sixteen
Below us, the beast had started flapping its wings. They were so wide and heavy, it was almost distorting the air itself.
It didnât stop me. It didnât stop the wolf inside. With a scream which was almost a berserkerâs roar, I landed on its back.
My mouth open, I tried to bite into its side, just above the wings. I could feel the wolf within, but of course, stayed only a man. My teeth remained human teeth. I bit into its side and tasted its pelt (which was disgustingly sour).
But then with a shake, it hurled me off. I had irritated it, rather than caused it damage. Undoubtedly my fifteen stone frame would have bruised it when I collided into its torso, but I didnât do anything to cause lasting injury. I donât think I even pierced its flesh.
I landed painfully on my shoulder with a thump, and the sudden fearful realisation of what I was and what I had attempted to do now threatened to overwhelm me.
The wolf retreated. Lowering its head.
Then it was me lying in front of this creatureâs hungry, salivating jaws. Knowing there was nothing I could do to stop it killing me. It could burn me with its fire, or squeeze me with its tongue. And now it could fly as well as run, there was nowhere I could go where it wouldnât be able to snare me.
âGarris!â Ludo called.
My eyes stayed on the creature. I didnât glance at Ludo. I had no idea whether he had one last grand plan. It hardly mattered anymore.
For the first time since it had become part of my mind, I tried to summon the wolf, rather than banish it. To pull it from within and make it take my place. If I was going to die, I wanted to die fighting. But nothing came. The wolf hid, whimpering.
While the creature moved in on me, its eyes ablaze.
Three shots rang from the darkness.
In the desert quiet, they were like the booms of high explosive.
The creature jumped, startled and confused. None of the bullets had hit it. Although at least one had come close, punching into the rock where Ludo still watched. Yet the creature must have understood this meant it was no longer the dominant force.
It had its sharp teeth, its burning eyes, the ability to spout fire, that tongue and now it had wings. If weâd let it work through its bag of tricks, who could fathom what else it might be capable of? But it also had brains and understood not to mess with any man wielding a gun. It backed away from me and stood in front of the rock, the stretch of its newly found wings longer than its entire body length. Then it peered into the desert for this unfamiliar presence. Perhaps wondering if there was a way for it to regain the upper hand. If it could get a sight of its new assailant, perhaps it could climb high and then swoop in blasting flames.
