News traveled slowly through the Umayyad Caliphate, and before the army had broken into Medina and finished the siege of Mecca, Yazid I perished. Once word reached the generals, the Umayyad army was ordered to return to Damascus. Ibn al-Zubayr took control of Mecca while Yazid’s son, Muawiyah II, took the throne, but few recognized his rule outside of Syria. Instead, two factions developed: the Confederation of Qays and the Quda’a. The Confederation supported Ibn al-Zubayr while the Quda’a recognized Marwan, a descendant of Umayya through the bloodline of Wa’il ibn Umayyah.[26] Both forces went to war, and the supporters of Marwan triumphed at the Battle of Marj Rahit, ensuring Marwan became caliph in 684.
