FELIX

“I hate you,” Darrin said, gritting the words out as he lowered the heavily weighted bar down to his chest. “This is not in my job description.”

Felix laughed, his fingertips lightly resting under the bar as he spotted his friend. It was true that most of the other guys in the IT department didn’t make much use of the on-site gym bLoved provided, but even if theirs was a pretty non-physical job, daily workouts had been a part of Felix’s life for far too long to give them up just because it was no longer in his job description, either.

Besides, the day he’d met Nicky, Nicky had listed “an ass you could bounce a quarter off of” as one of his dating requirements. Felix may not have fit Nicky’s ideal profile in terms of a guy who would bring a lot of excitement to the relationship, but the ass he could do.

“But didn’t Kelly put the gym in because it keeps our health insurance premiums down?” Remi, the blue-haired twink from editing, called out from the treadmills. “So even if it’s not in your job description, it’s sort of good for the job, yeah? And there’s all this research out now about how exercise really does make you better at your job. Better mental clarity and whatnot. Helps when we’ve gotta work weekends like this.”

“Oh, God,” Darrin grunted, his face turning red as he forced the bar back up with shaking arms. “An evangelist. Shoot me now.”

Felix laughed. “He may talk the talk, but I’m pretty sure Remi’s gym time is more motivated by Ian in accounting than exercise science. Now come on, Darrin, only six more and your set is done. Get it.”

“Six?” Darrin sputtered, shooting daggers at Felix with his eyes but lowering the bar to his chest again anyway. “I really do hate you.”

“But your husband doesn’t,” Remi offered, grinning as he picked up his pace on the treadmill without any apparent effort. “Felix is right about me banging Ian. And Ian says that Mike—” Darrin’s husband and Ian-from-accounting’s boss, “—is liking your gym results a lot.”

Remi waggled his eyebrows and Darrin groaned, making it through two more reps before whining again as he completed the third. “Fine,” he panted. “I admit… that Mike… has noticed… the results. But I still hate you both.”

“Three more,” Felix said, totally fine with Darrin whining if that’s what it took for the guy to get through his set.

“Don’t hate on me,” Remi said, shaking his head and holding his hands up as he ran. “I’m just killing time until I get some footage to edit. Ram’s the one who dragged you down here, yeah?”

“Fair enough,” Darrin said, groaning as he made it through two of the final three. “But remind me never… to befriend… a former athlete… again.”

His face turned the color of a tomato, and Felix repositioned his hands to take a hair of the weight off the bar for Darrin’s final rep.
