LIBRARY CAT PROFILE: STACKS

Stacks is a brown tabby who has been a dedicated member of the staff at the New Castle Public Library in New Castle, Pennsylvania, since 2010. He has his own Facebook page—Stacks the Library Cat—which he tries to update as frequently as possible.

1) How did you end up living at the library?

I wandered in one summer day, and even though the human librarians put me back outside a couple of times, I was determined to stake my claim and wouldn’t budge. Fortunately, all it took were a couple of meows and a pitiful look to melt their hearts and take me off the streets for good.

2) What are some of your jobs at the library?

I work as the official greeter and kid-magnet for the library. I’m also responsible for taking regular walks throughout the building to ensure that all is running smoothly, and that none of my things have been moved.

3) What are some of your pet peeves about your job?

I get upset when humans move my belongings. There is a reason I leave my little mice and ball toys lying around. Also, my coworkers sometimes need to be reminded about filling my food and water bowls in their various spots around the library. Somewhere along the way, I’ve learned to sleep through the hugs and kisses so human contact doesn’t bother me.

4) Who are some of your favorite patrons, and why?

My favorite patrons are the children. The adults pay my bills but the children bring me toys, come to my birthday parties, and give me lots of hugs and kisses, so I like them the best.

5) What’s your favorite book?

My favorite book is If People Were Cats by Leigh Rutledge. This book lets people know that if people were cats, “you’d be utterly content just being you.” Not to mention that the author lives with thirty cats—my kind of man!

6) What’s your advice for other library cats?

My advice for other cats is to give the humans a break and show them a little (not a lot of) attention; that way, they’ll become your best friends.

7) Do you have any advice for librarians who’d like to add a cat to their staff?

It’s important to make sure that the library staff, board, and patrons all welcome a cat into their library. Before I was hired on a permanent basis, the librarians set out a comment book and encouraged patrons to write down their opinions about having a feline employee at the library. After they read through the comments and listened to people give their support, the board of trustees officially brought me on board.

8) Anything else you’d like to add?

I’ve proven to be a great fund-raiser for the library. Bookmarks, decorations, and calendars have all been sold using my likeness. My presence has also brought people to the library for the first time, and they continue to come back. The library staff often tells me how spoiled I am, but I notice that they are frequently looking at me and smiling throughout the day.
