Platonic Killing Teams

Wolfgang Abel and Marco Furlan

Nickname: Ludwig

Place: Italy

Number of Victims: 10

Span: 1977 - 1984

Although Abel and Furlan are classified as serial killers, their crimes were committed due to their political and religious beliefs rather than for profit or sexual satisfaction. They targeted prostitutes, drug addicts, and homosexuals, believing them to be sub-human. One of their victims was burned alive, another was killed with an axe, a hitch-hiker was set on fire, a homosexual was stabbed 34 times, and a homosexual priest had nails hammered into his forehead. These were just some of the brutal killings they committed.

At each crime scene they left a hand written note signed with the name ‘Ludwig’. Nazi symbols of the swastika and eagle were always present on the notes, and an explanation for the murder was given. They were eventually captured and in 1997 were found guilty of 10 counts of murder, despite being charged with 27 counts. They lodged appeals and eventually were sentenced to just 27 years in prison. Both have since been released from prison, and are still declaring their innocence to anyone who will listen.

Henry Lucas and Ottis Toole

Nickname: Nil

Place: America

Number of Victims: 5 - 600+

Span: 1973 - 1983

Lucas and Toole first met at a soup kitchen in 1973, and although they were lovers at times, they still fall into the category of platonic teams. They embarked on a killing spree in 1973, but it is believed there were more murders committed by this evil duo before then. Whereas most serial killers target specific victims, Lucas and Toole didn’t care about the race, age, or gender of their victims. Also, they used a variety of killing methods, including stabbing, strangulation, shooting, and bludgeoning.

In 1983, Toole was arrested for arson, and not long afterwards, Lucas was arrested for a weapons charge. While they were in prison, Lucas started to brag about murders he allegedly had committed, and while Toole initially denied any involvement, it wasn’t long before he started to brag about certain killings as well.

They both ended up confessing to hundreds of murders but later recanted some despite knowing details only the killers would know. Lucas and Toole eventually helped the police recover 246 bodies of people who had been listed as missing, that they had killed. In all, they confessed to being involved in a staggering 430 murders.

One of the more infamous murders Toole later confessed to was that of Adam Walsh, the 6-year-old son of John Walsh who later became the front man of television programs such as America’s Most Wanted. Toole’s involvement in the murder of the young boy has not yet been proven, but the story he gave to the authorities matched the evidence found when the body was located. Therefore, this murder is attributed to Toole.

Toole was convicted of committing five murders, and Lucas was convicted of eleven murders. They each received the death penalty, but in both cases, this was later commuted to life imprisonment. In 1996, Toole died from liver failure, and Lucas died of heart failure in 2001.
