It was late evening when I snuck out of Central Tower and headed toward the market. Most of the stalls and shops were closed while we prepared for the fight coming our way, but a few remained open. I saw the silversmith was still around and hurried to the door. An old elf, his black hair greying at the temples, greeted me with a polite smile.

“Something I can help you with, Protector?”

“Yes, and hopefully, it’ll be quick so you can head home for the night.”

The old elf chuckled. “What is it you’re looking for?”

“I need a ring.”

He beamed, motioning me over. He removed a tray from behind the counter filled with silver and gold rings, some with stones and others simple bands engraved with vines and flowers. “No need to rush this decision. Take your time.”

I’d been thinking about how to tell Nienna that despite our recent fights and how much she was driving me crazy with worry, my love for her wasn’t going to fade. Last night, I had a vivid dream of a life with Nienna after the war. There was no more killing, no more fear of Nasir coming after us. It was Nienna and me, together. In the dream, there’d been a ring on her finger. Elves didn’t use rings to signify we were wed, but Garrick had one made for Millie. I could do the same for Nienna. When I awoke, the images stayed with me, and the hope I thought was lost came back, filling me with an optimism I hadn’t felt in a long time.

I picked out a silver band with an etching of willow tree leaves running the length of it. The ring was beyond perfect. Now all I had to do was find the right time to ask her, and with any luck, I’d be able to pass my hope for the future to her. Though she put on a brave face, there was no hiding the despair I sensed through our connection. Hope was what we needed.

Hope and a damned good plan for killing Nasir.
