Marissa

Zurich, Switzerland

Marissa softly blew on her steaming mug of Earl Gray tea as she stepped onto the balcony of her third-floor Zurich apartment. Her waist-length black hair hung in a loose braid over her shoulder and she wore her favorite oversized cardigan atop a Pat Benatar concert t-shirt and joggers.

She sighed contentedly as she settled into her favorite deck chair. The air was crisp and clean, with just a hint of basil as the wind tousled the plants of her Italian neighbors. While she’d enjoyed her years in Paris and would always be proud to have been raised in NYC, she’d fallen in love with the clean, affluent, culturally vibrant, and efficiently run Swiss city. She loved art and creative expression, and here she could have both, without the trash and crowds of New York, or the tourism and personal trauma of Paris.

Marissa relocated to Zurich at the suggestion of her employer after a bad break-up had left a foul taste in her mouth for the city of love. The two-bedroom flat was in a painfully normal-looking building on Albisriederstrasse. Still, it was her place of rest and peace, an escape from the craziness of life.

She’d never dreamed, as a skinny Puerto Rican girl growing up in The Bronx, that she’d work for the CIA before moving on to be an in-house assassin for Banque Suisse. Her particular kinetic problem-solving specialty was a discreet service only available to elite clients: the uber-wealthy, specifically those whose numbered accounts with the exclusive, private Swiss banking institution were valued in the billions. As a general rule, clients were left in the dark as to the specific actions taken on their behalf, plausible deniability being just another perk of riches and power.

As much as she enjoyed doing bad things to bad people, her true passion was photography. She sometimes fantasized about living a normal life, making her living as a freelance photographer. However, she was pragmatic enough to realize that the skill set she’d learned from the CIA paid far better. Why should all that training go to waste? On some level, she even enjoyed the danger and excitement.

With the comfortable living she earned from executions, she was able to accept interesting freelance photo gigs regardless of how little they paid. She’d recently been offered a two-week shoot of the world’s glaciers for National Geographic. She had also seized the opportunity to shoot a vodka advertisement in Norway after her day at the Jostedal Glacier.

She shook her head, laughing at the memory. She wasn’t privy to the rate the bikini-clad models had been paid, but she was certain it wasn’t enough to entice her to strip down to her underwear in the frigid Norwegian air.

Of course, she thought wryly to herself, it’s easy to declare a position for a scenario that will never happen. No one had offered or was ever likely to offer her a modeling gig. She was not unattractive, but she was too short, at 5’5”, and too curvy for the runway.
