CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Ryan

“What I’m thinking,” Mason said with a contemplative look, delight shimmering in his eyes, “is that we need to get the elusive gentleman in the corner to tell us about the bandits. And the best way to do that is to buy him a drink.”

“I’m not sure that’s the best idea,” West said, his forehead wrinkling in concern as he looked up from his character sheet. “What if he’s one of them?”

“I don’t think he is,” Mason said. It was obvious he’d already made up his mind and I was trying not to smile. It was our third Dungeons & Dragons session, and all four of them had dived into the world with boundless excitement and energy. It made running the games an absolute joy, but they were already keeping me on my toes and surprising me with their unique brand of moral chaos. They all seemed to want to do good… but weren’t always sure of the right way to go about it.

And then there was the fact that we were only six hours in and Jonny’s rogue had already adopted a lost gosling, so the party now consisted of a half-orc, an elf, a tiefling, a dwarf, and a goose.

Mason turned to me with an excited smile splitting his lips, the sort of smile that practically screamed danger and chaos. “Can I go up to the bar, buy two shots of whisky, and then take them over to the man in the corner, please?”

“Hmm, I want him to like me,” Mason said thoughtfully, rubbing his chin. The ginger tint in his stubble had gotten stronger over the past few weeks but it suited him, and when we were in bed I loved rubbing my face against it. And my thighs. “The good kind if I can afford it.”

“The good kind will set you back a gold piece for two small glasses, or the middling kind will be five silver for the same amount.”

“I’ll get the nice one. Gotta make a good first impression.”

I glanced around at the rest of the table, who were all staring at Mason with a combination of surprise, shock, and awe. Mason hadn’t noticed any of this, though, so he continued the role-play and headed over to the table in the corner with the drinks. I’d expected them to want to talk to the man—after all, he was the plot hook, so there was practically a neon sign flashing over his head—but I hadn’t been planning for Mason to do it alone.

And I hadn’t anticipated the flirty glint in his eyes.

“So I walk up to the table,” Mason said, full of confidence. “And I put one
