NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

I borrowed voices from Osamu Dazai’s Fairy Tales, the Buddhist priest Genshin’s Essays on Rebirth into the Pure Land, the poem “The Buddha is always everywhere / but it’s sad he remains hidden; / at dawn when human noise is still / in dreams, I see his shadows” from the classic Songs to Make the Dust Dance, and the Homeric “Hymn to Demeter,” which I read in Yoshihiko Kutsukake’s Japanese translation. I also borrowed the voices of the playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon from the late seventeenth century, the tenth-century author Yoshishige no Yasutane, and the contemporary writer Michiko Ishimure. And of course, 800 millimeters does not add up to eight meters—I’m terrible at math! Still, 80 centimeters is a lot of rain!
